Rural Broadband

[link to this post]

Hello Broadband Guru's!

Please help me! I have just moved to a very rural property in West Wales and am seriously struggling with internet. My partners job involves working from home using Teams/Zoom etc so we need to find a really good service provider so that she can continue to work effectively.

There are so many other people working from home in rural areas so it must be possible but we just can't find out how. All the usual providers either don't cover our area or are mega slow...…not even 1mbps!

Any advice/information will be so gratefully received.

Cheers. Danielle

Start with the BT/OR Wholesale Checker: https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL

What does it say for your phone number?

Have you asked any neighbours what they have?

Barring the wholesale checker recommended you might have to start looking at 4G as it may just be that there is nothing available for traditional physical lines in your rural area. There is the broadband USO from BT if you cannot get anything at 10Mbps or greater but the experience tends to be that they will probably just deliver 4G but it may be more expensive than just getting your own 4G - and with BT you are limited to EE as the 4G supplier where other suppliers may be better performing.

To add to the good suggestions above

- check to see if there are any rural wireless providers (fixed wireless rather than 4G/5G) that serve your area

- potentially try signing up for the Starlink beta, but as name suggests it’s still not fully launched so total numbers are very limited and you have to be in a coverage “cell”. Monthly cost is £89 and the special antenna is around £500.

Whereabouts are you based?

Ceredigion's part of the Rural Broadband Upgrade Fund and there are a couple of companies who are working to provide FTTP which is funded via vouchers, this will take time but have a look at what's going on.

There's a facebook page setup setup by community coordinators.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/ceredigionbroadbandu...

The two main companies involved are Broadway Broadway and Wefibre.

If you're in Pembrokeshire, get in touch with the council.

To further help in your quest for better broadband, you could always check out thegigabit voucher route as well by putting your postcode in the box.
