They only sell one new laptop which at £250 seems overpriced for its spec (only a 10" screen as well!).

|
|

Have you a budget or spec in mind? Minimum screen size, DVD drive?

|

Define "cheap",
John Lewis has some nice Toshibas in with dual core intels, 6gig of memeory etc etc for £350 and 2 years warrenty.
Of course a netbook off Amazon can set you back for as little as £180.
What do you want to use it for and how much are you willing to spend.

Cheap = cheap as possible. Will be used for browsing, maybe a little word processing nothing that will stretch anything built in the last few years. So far bizzarely the best prices are argos's ebay store (£279, although onloy 1GB RAM) and pc world/Dixons/Currys/everyone else's Lenovo at £299 . Minimum screen 15" so laptop not netbook, Checking out the bigpockets link now.
Thanks.

Anon,
This http://www.scan.co.uk/products/156-msi-cr650-042uk-b... looks pretty good
If you go for something cheaper make sure that it has an optical drive (read/write DVD/CD drive) if required.

Was checking scan after recieving the latest scanshot... but this is for a one finger typer who still types web addresses in to google rather than the address bar, I'll take as much memory as possible but other than that as long as its not steam powered it should be fine, hence no point in splashing the extra hundred.
I'm aware of the optical issue, but thanks for pointing it out.

Current leader Samsung RV510 320GB, £GB Ram, 2.1GHz celeron dual core £299. TBH I'm not sure I'll do much better no matter how long I look... throw in 3% cashback and free delivery. Can't believe high street beats internet though... ebuyer's cheapest is £350.

Typical on-line marketing trick, I'm afraid. Advertise somthing that you don't have at a knock-down price. Hopefully, the punters will buy something else.

Don't ignore local PC shops. They might be able to do you a good deal and you then have service on your doorstep.

No optical drive. Also, Win7 will run on 1GB but 2GB would be much better. Not sure about the Intel Atom processor either.

Anon,
Will the recipients of the pc need a firewire 400 connection, e.g. for a DV camcorder, at any stage? If so a pcmcia slot might be handy for that...

No, Office is probably the most strenuose task, no special connections needed theres a decent desktop in the house for that sort of thing.

Yup, Ive got that and about 19 variants argos have at the same price on the list. 2 year warranty at JL is prob the winner though...
Also LENOVO G575 320GB HD, 4GB Ram dual core AMD, 64bit Win 7. £299.
Thanks.

Best of luck with your choice - I do like the Scan deals though because their technical support is really excellent should it ever be needed.
Edit: coincidentally just got a mailshot from Scan http://www.scan.co.uk/products/156-asus-x52f-ex580v-... - needs more RAM though
