Advice: Cheapest Possible Upgade

[link to this post]

What I would like to do is install Windows Vista and make full use of the Aero Glass graphics. My Question is, what is the cheapest possible upgrades I need to make to achieve this?

My Current Machine Spec is:
AMD Athlon 2800+
1GB DDR Ram
120GB SATA150 HDD
64MB Gainward Graphics Card

Any help appreciated

Andrew

Looking at your current spec, I'd just suggest a new graphics card and possibly a bigger HDD - Vista has a way bigger footprint than XP.

That would be enough to get it running, though ideally you'd be wanting a faster CPU. That said, it seems to run pretty well on my Athlon 3000+. I've got a 512Meg ATi X1300 AGP card in mine, also on 1gig RAM.

I agree on the upgrading of the graphics card, however I can't see myself using 120Gb even using Vista. I already have RC2 installed and am bearly using 20Gb with all my applications.

What would you recommend I upgrade my processor to as I do occasionally se 3D design software.

Microsoft has listed the following requirements for what they call a Vista Premium Ready PC. A PC that meets or exceeds these requirements will be able to use the new Aero technologies.

a 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte of system memory
a DirectX 9 compatible graphics processor, with a Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) driver, and a minimum of 128 MB of Video RAM
40 GB hard drive with 15 GB free space
DVD-ROM Drive
audio output and Internet access
The minimum requirements for graphics cards from the major vendors include the Radeon 9500 from ATI Technologies and the GeForce FX from NVIDIA.

So looking at your spec you need a new graphics card and maybe a
extra gig of ram wouldnt hurt.

Depending on what socket your motherboard is, you could upgrade to a decent processor. Unless it is a socketA you should be able to pick up one for a reasonable price. I would also recommend buying another 1GB of RAM as Vista will require more than 1GB eventually. Don't think you need to bother upgrading the HDD.

Unfortunatley it is a Socket A processor, if anyone has a recomendation on where I can pick up a Athlon 3000+ or a 3100+ cheaply I'd be greatful.
Another 1GB of RAM is cheap enough so I'll order that while the christmas delivery is on at Ebuyer.

Cheers
