Uninstall on-board sound before adding new card?

[link to this post]

Hi, I would like to replace the on-board sound with a sound card in PCI slot. Is there a correct sequence of actions that have to be followed? What, if any, should be uninstalled, and from where? Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

Get into your BIOS and disable the onboard sound from there.

In my experience the new sound card driver installer (on the disk that came with the card) takes care of it all for you.

I would first uninstall the sound card driver, reboot and enter bios, disable the on board sound card.
That being done, install the pci card and install the new drivers.

Actually you have two choices.

1) if you plan not to use the onboard sound and wish to disable it. Then do what the others have said.

2). if you would like both to co exist then just install the drivers from the new sound card and move the cables across.

Theres nothing stoping you from having two sounds cards in your system smile..

sometimes, a mate of mine owns a small recording studio and he always use a soundcard instead of the onboard ones for obvious reasons, but I remember on one of his computers we decided to keep the on board sound for some reason. Never again, even with the soundcard as default we had software trying to use the on board one, in the end we gave up and got disabled the onboard sound.

for most people the on board sound of most computers these days are fine. The only thing I don't like is on board video, it is ok if you can still add a video card like on mine.

possibly caused by the sound card being of the same chipset but seems far more reliable in vista and win7 with multiple cards

I doubt the sound chip was the same, the one on board was I think a c-media, the sound card was and still is a turtle beach, £400 worth of sound card, mind it was a while back and it was a ISA card, still in use now.

but coming up to date, another acquaintance also had the same problem, the sound built in is a realtek, but the sound card is a M-audio, nothing like each other and yet we had all sorts of problems with that, even turning the thing off in the bios still caused problems. It took aged to get the thing working, so much for plug and play.

you are right vista and windows 7 do work better with multiple cards, put windows 7 on the computer and it worked ok then.

I still think the motherboard have a problem, but it works ok for everything else.
I want to get a M-audio sound card.
