CPU query

[link to this post]

I've just bought and fitted a new mobo & processor today. The processor is the AMD Phenom II X4 955 which is supposed to run at 3.2 GHz. Now I've got it up and running, in the system section of the control panel it's showing the processor as 1.6 GHz. Any suggestions as to where I've gone wrong?

I think your processor is a dual core. If it is you double the speed the control panel shows. 1.6*2 = 3.2

how you work that out ?

what motherboard is it ? may need a bios update or its a power thing like intels speedstep that lowers clock speed when idle

Sounds like AMD Cool and Queit is on, disable it in the bios if you want to.

This slows the cpu down when not in use to save power but when you use it the cpu will go back to 3.2Ghz.

And..

Annon... your dont have a clue what your talking about. Here is a clue, its a penom II "X4" and its 3.2Ghz per core and not 3.2 / 4 so 800Mhz per core... *sigh*

I have the same CPU installed on a Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P motherboard.

AMD 'Cool & Quiet' is ON and the operating system (Windows 7 Ultimate) reports it as '3.2 GHz'.

I've no idea why the OP's is seeing a different figure.

[Edit] The figure of 3.20 GHz remains constant regardless of load on CPU

Thank you all for the advice. I've found the problem, I had the CPU ratio in the bios set to 'auto' which had the processor running at half speed. What a plonker!

The CPUID CPU-Z in the thread by 12eason is a nifty little tool.

Its a Quad core processor, each core runs at full speed so no 1.6*2 or 1.6*4...
