Dell Latitude D610 drivers

Having replace the HDD on my Dell Latitude D610 laptop I've reinstalled Windows XP. I now need to find and install the drivers.

I managed to find the network card driver so I could connect to the internet. I need to get the WiFi & sound drivers as a minimum.

The Dell driver download area seems less than helpful despite putting in the Service Tag. Or perhaps I'm misunderstanding Dell's descriptions of the drivers.

Is there any handy little utility I can run that will scan the laptop, identify the drivers needed, download them, and install them?

I've tried the Dell one, that was a waste of time.

I've been trying DriverPack Solutions but that seems to be going very very slow (around 0.6-0.7Mbit/s) when downloading the driver packs.

Any helpful suggestions (dumping the laptop is not helpful!).

Eventually managed to find WiFi & sound drivers that worked so perhaps all now sorted.

Finding the right drivers when (re-)building a system has always been something of a black art in my experience.

I have always found te Dell Support site quite good for providing drivers for teh PC. You need te Dell application installed along with service tag but after that it is normally a reasonable process.

Got WiFi and sound sorted, all is well.

Except...

I cannot get a suitable Codec so the D610 can play DVDs via Windows Media Player V11.

Yes I know other Media Players exist, but WMP it is to be. And previously WMP could play DVDs, (and I'd built that system 18 months ago ). Nero Media Player plays DVDs, but not WMP.

I've tried K-Lite Codec, Xvid, and other Codec packs, but so far unsuccessfully. Clearly I'm missing something.

Any thoughts?

Sorry, can't help with that one. I have WMP v9 on my D600 and that certainly plays DVDs without a problem.

No!

I ran WMP and got the "Update Now" message but said no. I then played a DVD - all good. Closed WMP then re-ran it, this time I allowed the update and it updated to WMP11. I created a system restore before though.

WMP runs fine and plays DVDs.

If you can point me to where the codecs should be located I can have a look and see what is there.

Some of them might not be applicable for you as they would cover different configurations of the same laptop.

Thanks, that's similar to the list I got when I put the Service Tag in.

Looking at the list, there are 71 listed of which 3 are marked Urgent (1 of which is a User Guide), 27 Recommended, and 41 Optional.

In fact the only ones I found I needed were WiFi, Audio, and Broadcom network drivers.

Just need to get DVD working now, though that is a much lesser priority.

For the time being the laptop has gone back to my church as it's used for services. I'll bring it home when I have time and try to sort the DVD issue.
