Getting new life from an Old PC

[link to this post]

I have an old PC which I use for web browsing with the follow specs.

Pentium 4
2 GB Ram
120 GB Hard Disk
ATI Radeon 7500
CMedia AC97 on board sound
SiS 900 onbard ethernet
OS Windows XP

Tried upgrading to Windows 7 but failed as I can not find drivers that work for the sound or graphics. Don't want to go back to XP as more and more web sites need a later version of Chrome or Fire Fox which are not available for XP.

Thought I might try a 32 bit version of Linux (as I am sure the CPU and mother board do not support 64 bit) and was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for which version to use. While I have experience of command lines from when I used MS DOS I would like to start with a version which comes with an installer if possible.

Any advice, recommendations or web site links would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Lots of options out there. I did a google for "best linux windows replacement" and there are loads of sites giving options - like tech radar.

Ununtu and Mint are ones I have heard of being popular in recent years (I haven't really played with Linux for some time personally).

Almost any current Linux distro would suit you. They all come with graphical installers

Fedora would be my current recommendation. Though with that hardware you might want to consider Debian with the Xfce4 desktop.

Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Most of the popular Linux distributions are 64 bit now. I think you might still be OK with Mint 19 - pick the lightest-weight desktop which is probably XFCE. Plus Mint is well-supported and should be about as easy to use as you can get for a Linux distribution.

If you download Mint to a USB stick you should be able to try running it off the stick without touching your hard drive to see if it works for you before you commit mto installing properly. 'Should' because it's a while since I last tried Mint.
