Question About Broadband Service

[link to this post]

Hi all. I've just got my MAC Code from Pipex and IDNet was one of the two that I might be migrating too.
Now I can only recieve a max of 3MB so i'll be going for the 2MB service.

On the website there are 2 options for me:

Home 2000 | Contention 50:1 | 256 Upload | Upto 2MB Download |

Definition of contention here. 50:1 is standard for non ADSLMax products.

Regrades at IDNet are free, downgrades are

What about wireless capabilities. I want to be able to connect to the modem/router via USB then let my sister use her laptop to connect wirelessly to the internet even if I am on there.

Is this possible?

Yea I think i'll go for the solid 2MB. What kind of download speeds should I expect? Is it a stable & reliable connection? Do you lag during gaming or does webpages hang along time?

Wireless connectivity is a property of your modem/router and not dependent on your choice of ISP and certainly is possible if you buy the right kit. IDNet don't supply hardware as standard but will sell you kit if you want.

If you're buying a wireless modem/router, I'd consider using ethernet rather than USB for the wired connection. The Thompson Speedtouch 585 should do what you want (IDNet will sell you one for

Yup, It's all yours. As long as the router is powerd up and on line, it doesn't matter about your computer being on or not.

It's a rock solid service. I get 1800 kBps day or night, if there is any slow down during peak times, I haven't noticed it. I don't play any on_line games, but I do use on_line apps which are just as sensitive to latency, once again no probs.

Ah I see. I think i'm swaying towards IDNet much more then Zen now. I'm abit torn between Zen & IDNet but Zen don't offer a 2MB line, just a 8MB line. I'm worried about that as it won't be stable & solid where as IDNet will.

Only thing worrying me is customer service & reliability in speeds and connection.

What kind of download speeds would I get on a 2MB line?

Zen was in the frame when I migrated. Zen were not interested in providing fixed speed, although they would throttle a max connection if I wanted! (which is something I didn't want)

CS for me is paramount, and Idnet were an unknown quantity, but the proof of the pudding is that I have never looked back.

For some, the downside is no free web space or new servers. Make freinds with google and there are lots of free news servers and web space to be had out there.
