Would that I were, Bill, but alcohol makes me ill. No, there was a rugby match on last night, and two more today, then the All Blacks tomorrow. Rugby is the one thing, OK maybe one of the two things , guaranteed to tear me away from the keyboard.

It does, though the effect is beginning to die away now. I usually say "Bean, as in Rowan Atkinson" when asked for my surname. I either get a blank or a chuckle in return, though sometimes I do get things addressed to Rowan Atkinson!

I was a school governor when the series was at its peak, the kids loved the name.

Of course, it's not a new phenomenon, when I was a kid there was a TV programme called Billy Bean, and I've been called most things from baked to runner. It's worse for my sister, though, she's a has-Bean since she married.

Back in the 80s there was a bloke in our section who, good chap that he was, we always tried to keep out of our labs and workshops.

Electronic equipment was allergic to him... he only had to come within ten feet of a piece of complex (for the time) control gear and it would fall over with its legs in the air. Seldom failed

Ray was his fore-name.... can't remember his surname now, but it wasn't Bean!
