I haven't upgraded to the faster product so I'm happy with my "norm" of 7-6.5 mbps.

IDNet

Sync: 8128 / 832 kbps
IP Profile 7150 kbps
SNR Margin: 17.0-12.5 dB
Line Attenuation: 20.0 dB
SpeedTouch 585

I am approximately 930 metres from the exchange (straight line distance)

I get a constant 12- 13 MB during the day but anytime after 6pm its all over the place
from 0.5 MB to 12 MB - which makes their off peak allowance almost pointless as some downloads don't finish before I'm back into my peak allowance LOL.
No idea what is casuing this unless its just that whole upto X MB branding of Broadband related products in the Uk.
I contacted IDnet about this - and got the usual check your filter etc can't help but feel palmed off to be honest.
I am in the market for a new router but have tried so many in the past think its a lost cause replacing the hardware.
Am actually contemplating looking for a different provider...

I don't have that problem at all and speeds stay consistent at any time of day. However I have noticed some popular sites on the net particularly sluggish recently, but also I know others on different ISP's have found the same too.

Have you checked if your exchange is congested and/or tried say a Microsoft download, for instance a Directx Redist Package or service pack, just to see what speeds you get from those with good capacity?

Edit:- I must add too, that pings are stable again and very low too (beating my last ISP).

How would I check if my exchange is congested?

And I will try a microsoft download this evening.

But once again how would I find out if my exchange is congested and what do I do if it is?

I did suggest to IDNet that it could be congestion/over capacity or something but I got no reply they have a tendeancy to just stop replying to emails whenever I enquire as to whether theres an issues etc.

All I know is I was affected by an isuue with the Peterborough BRAS all thru december and january the problem kept reappearing BT claim they have finally resolved this issue but after 6pm to 5/6 am I have problems and this was the same time frame as when issues with the Peterborough BRAS would appear so I can only think the issue hasn't quite been resolved. Prior to this isue my speeds were constant throughout the day. I have raised this with IDNet but they just don't seem to care.

Once through the exchange and onto Idnets system there is no congestion, it could be that certain websites have these problems. I have noticed that some websites are slower at different times of day and night yet others seem to have no problems, it could be down to where they are hosted and how they are hosted.

I have changed my dns servers to OpenDNS and they seem very good.

Yes ok... But can I not expect some kind of consistent speed throughout the day and why would it fluctuate so wildly when during the morning and afternoon the speed/throughput (whatever) is consistent yet at some point in the evening it just drops out? With packet loss etc I can't even run the bt speedtester which is what they keep requesting me to do?
I tried another router when I was experiencing issues and got the same results?

You could try Speedtest.net Provided you use the Maidenhead server the results seem very similar to the BT speedtest.

To be honest you would be better hopping over to iDNetters as the people there are better placed to help sort your problem.

But no if IDNet customer support arent to helpful I doubt the forums will be any better.
