Shall I go for IDnet?

[link to this post]

Maybe hard to get an unbiased opinion but the main reason is the 1 month contract(I assume) and the fact it works out about the same as O2 access which is 12 months and a worse service.

I will likely sign up for O2 and get the free 2 months at the moment and the cashback then migrate across to Idnet but just wanted some honest opinons!

I can only get ADSL and not ADSL2+ and less than a mile from the exchance in a town centre flat.

I am a mid-high downloader mainly due to be used to it! before I had ADSL2 I used to download less than 30 gigs a month but now download stuff from Iplayer, reinstall Windows pretty much monthly and get updates and software, download homebrew, go on XBL and PSN, play World Of Warcraft etc.

Most opinions are biased to some degree since they often speak from personal experience smile

A lot will depend on how much you download as to whether you regard iDNet as value for money and that is a judgement only you can make. You do need to get a fairly accurate idea of how much you download and when (peak, off-peak), since this will determine which package you need to go for. Having determined this, you may find another supplier such as AAISP is more suited to your usage patterns

However, iDNet offer a one month contract, they do not traffic shape in any way whatever, currently have plenty of capacity on their network and support is well regarded. Speeds are pretty constant throughout the day but the actual speed you achieve will depend on the quality of your line and whether or not there is any exchange congestion. There is also a friendly and helpful forum.

With the caveat above regarding usage, I doubt you would be disappointed. My own experience has been excellent and I have no complaints whatever.

I dont know when my most usage is to be honest, when I had Entanet 3 years ago I was happy with the 10pm off peak but after I moved into halls and they had a glitch on the network in my room meaning I wasnt barred from torrents or gaming or had download limits etc I started downloading a lot, then when I got ADSL2+ I downloaded a lot.

I do think most of my downloads these days are off peak if not almost all.

Btw is the peak/off peak same for weekends or is weekends all off peak as I seem to do a lot of downloading then.

You should go with O2 LLU because of its better (currently unlimited) bandwidth allowances and also because it's better value for your money. IDNet does not use LLU and is therefore dependent on BTs IPStream and/or WBC provision which is more expensive. IDNet is good if your local exchange doesn't offer LLU providers, but it's a bit on the expensive side.

In reply to a post by JNeuhoff:

I agree O2 LLU is better value, but the OP suggests that it is O2 Access which is available rather than LLU. In that case iDNet (or AAISP) would be the better option since O2s Access product is generally regarded as rubbish.
