Just 1 week out of warranty and my macbook case cracks.
Has this happened to anyone here and if so how did they proceed?
Being over 100 miles from the nearest apple store mine was brought from Curry.
This may be the last mac I buy if this is the quality of the thing.
HELP!!!

Sadly this is quite common with the plastic Macbooks and is clearly due to poor design. In fact, it happened to a German friend's Macbook but she never bothered to get it fixed. I certainly would have.
All I can suggest is that you contact Apple, they may have an extended repair programme for the Macbook.

Has it cracked along the front edge where your wrists would be? If so that is a known problem and should be fixed even if out of warranty.

Correct. Call Apple Support on 0870 8760 753.
Give them the Serial number of your computer and a very brief explanation.
Now ask to be put through to Customer Relations to obtain a CS Code (out of warranty override).
Ones Customer Relations have agreed to a free top case replacement you will be able to take the laptop to any Apple Authorised Service provider (notice the CS code is only valid for that one specific part, if there are other things wrong with the machine you need to tell them there and then).
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards
Malte

I believe Apple "screwed" up with making the old macbook casing from plastic. Hence why they use aluminium now.
Other laptops use dull thick ugly plastic and this is probably why these break less. Apple use different materials.
Anyway, the new ones are aluminium and less problematic (although you can dent it).

Unfortunately the aluminium ones although sturdier, have a pitiful 'airport' range compared with the plastic enclosed antennas.

Maybe. But I have a Macbook pro and have never cared about wifi range.

my experience is that my old style MBP is maybe a little less sensitive to wi fi strength than my macbooks.
maybe.

Funny you should mention this - my macbook has a small crack along the right front edge which my sleeve catches occasionally. I will take it to the Apple store now I know it is a common fault. Presently sellotape is being used as an effective temporary fix.

Classic, I saw dozens back in the days when I was still working for a Apple Service Provider.
Cracked edges (front/palmrest) or changing colour from white to yellow are both reason for a free replacement under warranty.
Just remember that if the unit is technically out of warranty, one needs to convice Customer Relations to issue a CS code first.
Kind Regards

Never mind about the Wireless range. I can't stand how hot they feel to touch when I type on one - feels very uncomfortable to me.
Long live the PISMO - best mac laptop ever made!

occasionally firefox starts bingeing on cpu cycles and the case gets hot, otherwise mine runs pretty cool.

Must be a newer model. The hottest one ever was the original 2006 MacBook Pro. You could literally use it as a hot plate to keep your food warm.

I can also confirm that this is a common fault - happened to me a month or so ago. Called up apple, they logged the problem asking me to take it to the nearest apple store or service centre. I took it to the trafford centre that weekend, and within an hour it had be replaced with a new top cover.

Was this in the original warranty period ?
or was it during AppleCare time ?
- just rather interested in case mine develops cracks again once my Applecare has expired
