Is there any way in iTunes that I can stop it backing up my iPhone each time I dock it.
With about 14gig of music on there, it takes forever.
Also, is iOS4 out today? Need to check it out and if no real improvement, will not been moving onto the iPhone 4.

You could change this setting in Preferences.

Check the "Prevent iPods, iPhones etc from syncing automatically"

Not sure if iOS 4 is out today but it IS worth the upgrade.
Have been running it since the first beta and I would upgrade it as soon as you can.

Hmn, I would like to sync automatically though and just leave backing up as elective

Ta, will keep a watch for it today.

With your phone connected to itunes, right click on your phone then click on reset warnings. this usually makes the back up quicker. The warnings are what itunes sends to apple, however has been known to go corrupt and take ages for your phone to back up.
One other thing, as far as i am aware, a back up will only save your settings, photos, sms, etc. Your music & apps are taken care of during the synch.
For instance, just the other day i loaded ios4 on to my missus's phone and ended up wiping everything. I lost over 800 photo's and believe me, she wasnt too happy that evening.
My mate showed me where the backups are stored (edit -->Preferences --> devices). I think this is the same place where you can change your settings.
p.s., i may be wrong also
just seen uno's link, so it is the correct place.

Hmn this is very odd then. It usually takes around an hour or so to backup the phone.
Did the reset warnings bit and it is still chuntering along so will see on my next docking.

There's something wrong with your setup. I haven't noticed that mine takes long at all. Sync and backup together probably take under a minute.
After I installed IOS4 I had to restore the last backup. That was a full image of the data, and that took under ten minutes (8GB iPhone 3G). BTW, I didn't lose any photos, songs or other content in the process as far as I can tell.
Backups should be incremental these days, so they should only backup the changes since the last backup which don't normally take long ... unless you are still on the first version of iPhone OS, which wasn't incremental, and *did* take forever.

Try deleting all your backs in the screen shown, running a full one and then re-syncing. See if that runs quicker.

Good point alan - it might be worth Nanook checking that he has got the latest OS. Like you, mine takes just a minute to sync and backup.

Will do, when the OS update is done

I have deleted the single backup that was there, resynced and still the same problem
|
|
|
|
Right forget the IOS4 question, I know it is out and cannot load it due to the backup issue.
I have deleted the backup through iTunes, reset all warnings, set it to do a fresh backup manually and that is taking ages.
Any ideas?

Where's you nearest Apple Store? Time to visit a Genius methinks.

I would like to think something like this could be resolved without having to resort to that.
Some guy on another forum suggested that photo's stored on the iPhone could be the cause.
I only had 8!!!!

A Genius might be quickest in the long run, there's a couple in Bristol:

It means getting off my backside
Will try it as last resort.
Next thing is to try and completely reset the phone and start over.
Is there a way of doing this whilst retaining all my contacts etc?

Actually if you take off the music and pics for the iOS4 update might be worth it (just uncheck them in iTunes and do a sync) - the backup and restore of apps and music/vids on mine was what took all the time (just make sure that you only remove stuff that you have in iTunes!).

It means getting off my backside I'm not unacquainted with the feeling
Can't help with the contacts question, I haven't got a iPhone.

Yeah I have removed everything now.
Unfortunately, in order to get them off the iPhone, I have to sync, so the next hour or so will be it performing the backup before sync lol.

Seems I am not the only one.
Going for a restore so I guess I loose everything and can start over.

Contacts etc should automatically be backed up in iTunes.

Broadly following the process by Sterno worked, however, having the issue with the backups meant everything was lost, which in and of itself is not a bad thing, nice clean start.

Am puzzled by this.
My process was
1. DL update file. Was going to wait to install, but got impatient.
2. Started installer. Backup was taking ages and I thought it had stalled, but left it while watching footie.
3. At half time the installation was just completing.
4. Rebooted phone in factory state (thought it had failed and was reverting but then saw the new "bubbly" wallpaper).
5. After a pause it began restoring the apps (this pause may be the point where people panic a bit)
Second half started. During a pause in play checked and
6. Then music/ vids were being restored
All settings restored by just after full time.
Was warned at the outset it could take an hour and it took not far shy of 2 hours, which I am well used to with apple - the last minute of my first Leopard install too and hour and a half.

My problem was an issue, pre iOS4 with backing up the phone, which took hours and indeed hung at times.
By downloading iOS4 but not installing it, then doing a restore with seemingly no backup to restore from, it installed iOS4 very quickly and left me with a clean phone.

The iPhone backup does not touch the media content on there as part of its backup process so the reasons for the slow progress are nothing to do with the music. Music is never backed up as it is synchronised with iTunes which holds the master version.
Best place for advise is the Apple forums themselves.

Tried updating this am but after 4 hrs still nothing had progressed. I cancelled the backup and did a restore which loaded iOS4 and reloded all my music and apps etc.
