Airport Express #3

Proposed setup:

AE#1 in sitting room, wireless controlled from iMac (might be an Airport Extreme if budget allows)

AE#2 elsewhere, independently controlled from MacBook, possibly with its own library, possibly using the library shared from the iMac.

All on the same LAN obviously.

Would it work?

No reason why not - just don't forget what you call them

Extreme is just a router, without AirTunes. Only Apple TV and Airport Express have the AirTunes feature. The Express can also act as DHCP router if required (Extreme has the faster CPU). AirTunes will work for any device you allow to connect by wireless or ethernet so whether you keep multiple iTunes libraries on multiple machines, all can broadcast (one stream per device at any one time) to any of the AirTunes enabled devices. A single stream can be broadcast to multiple remote AirTunes and locally connected audio hardware synchronously which makes audio around the entire house possible.

I have a Netgear DG834v4 in modem mode, an AEBSn as DHCP router with satellites Apple TV and Airport Express operating in different rooms. Apple TV can not be used as an internet access point though, just AirTunes but it can broadcast its own tunes to additional devices synchronously (just like iTunes on the Mac).

If your budget can stretch to buying an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and an Airport Express (AE), you could set them in a WDS setup. The Airport Express can be moved freely around the house wherever you would like to place the Speakers(provided its within range). It also allows you to extend your Network range.
You will need a Modem to pass the PPPoE to the Airport Extreme Base Station. I use a DrayTek Vigor 100.
iTunes has a Tab to select the Airport Express to play your music on
