What's everyone doing about this - waiting for Snow Leopard?

I already have OS X Leopard, and I have access to Snow Leopard as a developer, so this is not a saving for me. In any case, Snow Leopard may be quite cheap when it arrives, since it doesn't appear to add many direct end-user benefits. I do want to grab iWork 09, since I now standardise on iWork for that sort of stuff; and I guess iLife would be a good move as well. But I think I'll just get them as separates.

I'm not sure how it got into my head but I was expecting Snow Leopard in Q1 but now I've realised that's unconfirmed and probably not going to happen I think i'll go the separates route as well.

So how does Snow Leopard run on the Mac Pro, are you encouraged with the dev release?

Did I say I had it already? I'm just going by the publicity it got when Apple announced it.

As a retired person, I'm way too busy, and too ill-equipped, to be able to spend time debugging early releases of Apple software. I might grab it soon, though. It must be getting to the point where I can switch to it as my primary OS.

I just assumed you would have, lol I'm looking forward to it actually, not just for the Mac but to see what else Apple might do with it. If the rumours are true and we can choose what to install I will plump for 64bit and run with whatever software will work with it - hoping Apple software in particular will be ready for it.

What's the idea behind this box set ?

Is this a forerunner of a return to the old system of having such things pre-installed on a new machine ?

Remember when Apple works was there when you opened up your brand new shiny Mac ?

I can't imagine anyone now who would be buying a new machine , which comes with OS X 10.5.6 and then gets this box set with its copy of Leopard - or am I missing something here

There are still a lot of people who don't have Leopard. Increasingly, Apple will want to offer software and features that require 64 bit OS and all the extras that are in the Leopard Cocoa frameworks. The new iWork and iLife require Leopard, I believe. This deal is an incentive to those people to upgrade to Leopard now, rather than wait and leapfrog to Snow Leopard later.

You're not missing anything Goldie, as Alan already pointed out the box set provides a good way for late adopters to get onto Leopard with software designed for it (and save almost £100). But if the BoxSet becomes a permanent feature it's an excellent way to upgrade to Snow Leopard if you don't mind waiting.

I wouldn't hold out for that if I were you. Firstly, the price of Snow Leopard is not known, but there's no guarantee that it will be as much as previous feature-rich versions of OS X. So the saving on a Snow Leopard box set may not be much. Secondly, if my speculation is correct and the box set is designed to get Tiger users to buy Leopard now rather than wait for Snow Leopard, a Snow Leopard box set doesn't make any sense.
