Problems with Dashboard

[link to this post]

Hi,

Ive recently got a problem with the dashboard on my mac.... When ever I open it (which is not very often, normally by mistake of pressing on on the scroll on the mouse). I loose all my passwords stored for websites I use... Such as the forums here. - every time I open the dashboard all of them disappear - this includes the username as well.

Does anyone know if a setting may have been changed? or what i could do to fix this problem...very confusing but I have noticed this only happens after the dashboard has been opened (even if it is only for a second or so).

Many thanks
Craig

Hmm, not seen that one, have you tried deleting the Dashboard Prefs file(s) (there are two - in /Users/Youraccountname/Library/Preferences/).

Hi, Thanks for the reply..

Ive just deleted both dashboard files under the preferences page and I am still getting the problem.....

I did find it strange and took me a while to notice when it was happening only after the dash board had been open.... Ive gone a general search on the apple support site with no luck..

Edit: I think I should also say I havnt added any additions to the dashboard - the ones there just the ones the mac came with.. the only thing ive changed is the city for the weather updates..

Craig

Very strange, I've also changed the town in my weather updates and added a couple of things. I don't use it much either but it does not cause any problems if I do.

Probably a silly question, but you haven't said- does it survive a restart?

I know its really confusing I dont know what I could have done or what I could have changed... I dont really play around the settings much - only time I do is when im in uni to set the proxy server as macs for some reason dont automatically pick it up at my uni..

I will keep searching the internet to see what I could have done... it used to be fine, only started doing this the pass week or so.... I have also tried to do a re-start. I shut down the Mac ever night (not just close the list, but a shut down from the menu)...

I really can't think what would cause that, but you can disable your mouse from selecting dashboard. Go to system prefs>mouse>dashboard>off

I can't actually help with the original problem as I've never heard of that one before but you can totally disable Dashboard:

Open Terminal (in Applications>Utilities) and enter the following...

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES (hit enter/return)

killall Dock (hit enter/return)

Replace YES for NO to reinstate

Dashboard once opened remains open and uses CPU cycles until a restart.

Good luck,

By losing all your passwords, are these the cookies stored in your web browser? If you're using Safari, check whether this is happening (Safari>Preferences>Security>Show Cookies) by looking before and after the dashboard anomaly.

Are you using 10.5.6? There is an issue with Safari and cookies after that update - they get lost for some reason which means you have to frequently log back into sites such as here, Facebook and YouTube.

On the Apple discussion forums Dashboard was mentioned as a possible culprit, more specifically if web clips are used. I have removed all my web clips from Dashboard and have not had the problem again so far.

However going in and out of Dashboard itself does not seem to cause the problem like you have so it may be something entirely different.
