Re: Multiple SMTP Servers in Mac Mail

Am I missing something? He should be able to send via your SMTP server regardless of the state of Tiscali's email.

All my accounts go via different servers, only one of which belongs to my ISP.

TBH I'd suggest that he sets up an ISP-independent email address, with someone like 1and1 or Purple Cloud, then provided Tiscali hasn't completely fallen over he'll have email... I'd also suggest he migrates away from Tiscali, but that's a separate argument tongue

The non-Tiscali e-mail he has is through my website, which is hosted by 1and1. The problem is that even if you enter the 1and1 server (i.e. auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk) it won't connect. It seems that the only SMTP he can send e-mail through is Tiscali's (even forcing it out on port 587 doesn't work) - he's tried it on both his Mac (Mac Mail) and PC (OE). I will have a look next time I go over, but as far as I can guage from the details he's given me, everything is setup correctly his side. He's happy to forget about it and simply use the e-mail through 1and1's webmail service, but thinks like this bug me, so I'm interested in trying to find a workaround!

I suggested a different ISP (I was once a Tiscali customer) but he didn't seem keen. smile

Cheers,
Marc.

I forgot to mention, if he sends the mail through the 1and1 SMTP when going to port 25 it just comes up asking him to choose a different SMTP. If he changes the SMTP port to 587 (which 1and1 support, according to their FAQs), he gets the following error:

The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was '<e-mail removed>'. Subject 'testing port 587 from pc', Account: 'imap.1and1.co.uk', Server: 'auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 must be authenticated', Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79.

I've asked him to check the SSL (1and1 don't require it), but other than that, I'm at a loss.

Cheers,
Marc.

You're missing the fact that Tiscali block all port 25 traffic except to their SMTP server. Be do the same if you have a dynamic address (but allow it for a static address).

You're right, I didn't know they did that... that's two ISPs off my list.

Not that Tiscali were ever on it tongue

Select Mail, then Preferences, then Accounts tab. Select 'Account Information' In the 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) use the Menu List to select "Edit Server List".
Select the IMAP account and choose the 'Advanced" tab. Here you can select default ports or custom. You must also select SSL and input 'Username' and 'Password'
You do "Not" need SSL for pop accounts or 'Username' and 'Password'

Above applies to tiger and leopard

Hope it helps
