Is there any point to the ExpressCard/34 slot on the Macbook Pro? I don't know anyone that uses it and I've seen very few products to use it, not even in an Apple Store. Do they require specific drivers or are they cross compatible with all PCs and Macs? I'd rather have had 2 extra USB ports and am considering using it for that if I can find the right card.

Obviously limited on power to what a single port will provide, but worth considering?

You can get EXpressCard/34 adapters that connect to e-Sata connection - using this to connect to an e-Sata drive would give a much faster connection than other types of connections.
I regret the passing of the PCMCIA to CF card type adapter as that allowed very fast CF card to computer drive transfer of images

I'd rather have a powered hub for that as I have a non-powered hub already and it's pretty slow. Cheers though.

Yes I've seen plenty of those as well as ones for firewire, camera cards and USB, but I'm not sure if they'll be just plug-n-play for Macs although one I'm looking at on ebay says Mac and PC.

I use it for a Huwaei E870 mobile broadband card.
Although since iPhone 3.0Beta2 my VPN works over tethered internet with that it's not been plugged in.

Interesting, I never thought of that but I thought there would be far more USB devices for this purpose.

The slot is used for SxS Flash cards used in the Sony XDCam EX systems, 8/16Gb v. fast serial interface. Cool FCP workflow! Editing in the field, no tape, all works in very high humidity and intense cold.
