Why do people love their Mac?

[link to this post]

As subject.

I love it because:

- It rarely does anything to annoy me (remembering Windows Update that literally forces you to restart after updates have been installed). Plus I don't have to "look after" the OS as seems to be the case with Windows (Vista was somewhat better at optimizing itself)

- The OS has not locked up since I got it 4 or so months ago

- The OS responsiveness is much better than my old Vista machine (which actually had better specs)

- Excellent for managing Photo's with iPhoto.

- Being a student the extended AppleCare warranty was only $45

- Love the keyboard.

I find, for the tasks I require of them, my Macs are easier to use and more stable than the PCs I've owned. (From Win3.11 to Vista, skipping a few on the way.)

But love them? It's a machine... crazy

If I can respond (and don't flame me - I've got a Mac as well as a few PCs):

- It rarely does anything to annoy me (remembering Windows Update that literally forces you to restart after updates have been installed). Plus I don't have to "look after" the OS as seems to be the case with Windows (Vista was somewhat better at optimizing itself)
Windows update rarely forces a restart nowadays - certainly no more often than OS X does.

- The OS has not locked up since I got it 4 or so months ago
I can't remember the last time that Windows locked up - certainly not since 98, other than on a machine that had specific problems (normally hardware related).

- The OS responsiveness is much better than my old Vista machine (which actually had better specs)
I can't comment sensibly on that. I do know that OS X on my PPC Mac Mini really crawls (the words "wading" and "treacle" come to mind). On the other hand, Gentoo Linux on the same machine flies.

- Excellent for managing Photo's with iPhoto.
Yep - I like iPhoto. Better than any Windows or Linux applications that I use for the same purpose.

- Being a student the extended AppleCare warranty was only $45
I have never, ever felt the need to buy an extended warranty on any computer. (I lie slightly - we did buy service agreements on the servers that I used to manage, but I wasn't paying and I valued my job.) And I have never, ever (at home) needed the services that such a warranty would have given me.

- Love the keyboard.
My Mac keyboard really sucks - one of the old ones with a transparent body - it was expensive, has poor feel, and has proven to be unreliable. I gather the newer ones are better. The same remarks hold for my "Mighty" (you must be joking) mouse. Worst mouse I have ever had.

I like my Mac because:

- It's neat.

- It's very low-powered (I mean consumption but, unfortunately, also true for computing power).

- It's the only way I could get a PPC to play with.

- It's UNIX!

- I love XCode - and the price isn't bad!

I'd love to have so much money that I could afford to buy a newer Mac without thinking about it but as it is I can't justify spending that much on something that won't perform appreciably better than a put-together-from-bits PC at a far more reasonable cost.

I'm going to disagree with you on two points:

-- Windows Update always forces restarts after you have installed updates! Forces; as in it annoys you so much that you feel inclined to just hit "Restart Now" and be done with it. It will pop up every 4 (or is it 10) minutes until you do. OS X does not do this.

-- To run OS X 10.5 sensibly its probably worth having 2GB of RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo. There's no point sticking it on an PPC Mac Mini and expecting it to run like Linford Christie! I have a 2.4Ghz Aluminum Macbook, 2GB DDR3 RAM and it runs like an absolute dream.

I'm sorry, that's just wrong. Most updates don't require a restart at all. Some do, and if that fusses you, set Update to notify you of updates but not automatically install them. The flexibility is there, you've just got to use it.

So why did Apple sell PPC Mac Minis with OS X (and originally with 256MB RAM - at least mine has 512MB)? It seems particularly perverse to have complete control over the software and the hardware and then to sell the hardware with unsuitable software.

It would help if an update informed you before you installed it that a restart would be required... as OS X does.

I have mine set as you describe, and that aspect still irritates me.

Not entirely unreasonable - in the Apple forum.

-- I have a Windows Vista laptop and almost all updates (excluding Windows Defender) require a restart. As does our work Windows Small Business Server 2008 SP1.

-- You machine is obviously not powerful enough to support Leopard. You should put in at least 1GB for it to have even the slightest hint of responsiveness.

There are so many reasons to love a Mac it's hard to know where to begin. For me it's a creative thing and always has been, that no other computer or operating system available today can assimilate the productivity of working on a Mac.
