Hi,
My Son just got the iPhone 3GS (I've got the 3G)....first impressions..
It's faster than ever.
Voice control looks good.
Compass and Video are good.
More space is always welcome.
I've upgraded my 3G to OS3, it's a long download (200+ Meg) and in my case an overnight backup and install, but some nice features especially;
Removal of 9 screen limit for no. of apps that can be loaded.
Cut & paste works well.
Search is good.
My overall conclusion:
If buying now I'd get a 3GS.
Given my remaining contract time (c8 months) however there's not enough there to tempt me into an early upgrade especially given that you have to pay the contract off in full! (or pass on your phone- more likely!)
OS 3 is definately a worthy upgrade for an existing iPhone
Tethering at £14.68 / month for 3Gb is too expensive and I for one will be sticking with my mobile dongle from 3!
Overall a good hardware and software release from apple.
Now I'm just waiting for the Tom Tom app.
By the way the DocsToGo app rocks!
Any other thoughts?
Regards

Apple is way behind in terms of imaging. I'm not a believer in high res camera phones, but they could have gone a bit further than 3 megapixels.
OLED screen would have been nice.
I really don't see why they can't allow for a memory card somewhere. Make the SIM tray bigger and have a memory card holder in there.

gilesjuk,
IMHO number of megapixels is not the only criteria for ability of a camera, other issues like sensor size also come into play. I found my 3G camera with its very limited megapixel size could outperform some higher megapixel ones. The new 3G S steps this up and is quite acceptable for a phone....have you tried one and if so what difficulties are you having?

I know all about sensor size etc. But I'm not on about this, when people look at the iPhone they go "only 2MP" and the new one increased it a tiny amount. It doesn't seem like much of a development for 2 years.
There's dumbphones with 8mp cameras now. I think Apple could have at least gone to 5mp.

Buy a camera then.

I have a Canon 5D thanks.
I'm not talking about myself, I'm talking about the reviewers and people who compare specs. We all know the OS and apps are good but Apple are technology leaders and they're way behind in terms of specs on the iPhone. The good software isn't enough to stay ahead of the competition forever.

It doesn't seem to hurt the sales figures.

Love the quality of 3G S video, better than I expected, same for the camera results. Battery life seems to be hugely improved too.

Paying my remaining contract (10mths) would be too much for me to do in one go if I upgraded. Looking back I wish I got the 3G on PAYG so I could get a sim only contract for £20 and get the same features but a bit cheaper over all and with more mins and alot more texts.
02 seem to charge more for long contracts!

There's dumbphones with 8mp cameras now. And dumb customers... a lens a few mm in diameter isn't going to give you good pictures even with 100Mpixel sensor, you'll just see the blur in more detail.
