Re: iPhone 3G S and OS3 Initial Thoughts

The good software isn't enough to stay ahead of the competition forever.

The App store certainly is enough to keep it ahead of the competition for a good while as long as the iPhone doesn't turn into a complete turd, spec-wise.

Personally, I'm surprised the physical design of the iPhone hasn't changed because it's easier to perceive something as 'new' if it looks new, and not like the old model.

It doesn't seem to hurt the sales figures.
Well, I don't know about that so much. I waited one day after the 3G S was released to order mine - Ok, it would've been ordered on the release date but, that's Carphone Muppets for you. mad

The cam on my brothers phone is 5MP, and the pics are quite good. It can't beat my 7.1MP Canon though. My 3G iPhone has many more features & Apps, and I can't wait until tomorrow to get the 3G S delivered now.

OS 3.0 has added a lot of xlent features to the iPhone (some of which 'coulda' been added on 2.2) but, it's all good. Well done Apple!

Over 1 Million x 3G S sold in 3 days over the weekend? I don't think Apple are hurting.

That is excellent, and let's see them doing better because of it. The iPhone is great and it'll be taking a couple of [potential] PC buyers to the Dark Side. laugh

Well to me the app store is the problem, Apple keep rejecting applications I would want and buy. The fully licenced Commodore 64 emulator was rejected even though similar apps were approved (SIDPlayer).

There's loads of really useless apps and just a really poor user experience trying to track a good one down. I want quality not quantity.

Also, the quality is hampered by all the cheapskates who leave reviews like "£0.99 is too much for this" etc... The expectations are too high and the prices too low.

True, but complacency isn't good.

When the iPhone came out people thought 2MP was bad, two years later we have only a touch more. Quality appears to have improved, but it seems like slow progress for 2 years.

I don't think Apple has come out with anything radical since the Macbook Air. Steve has been away from the helm and it shows.

Well the Register gave the 3GS 80% and mentioned that it should come with a 5MP camera. It would have got a better score if it wasn't for O2's greedy prices and the camera.

I love the App store. If you're careful you can separate the good stuff from the bad and it's useful to search stuff by category instead of just looking in the top 25 or 'new' section.

I can't fully understand Apple's iffy censorship on certain Apps like you say though wrt the C64 App. I'd love to see that and play wizball or creatures on my iPod. laugh

I quite the app store as well, the only thing I wish they'd do is seperate the 'lite' from the 'free' apps. I don't see why the lite apps can't be on the same page as the full apps as a 'trial' version.

They won't allow interpreted code, even though there are apps approved that do so like Sega games that use the original ROM and the Sidplayer.

Pointless restrictions.
