I want to send emails from my ISP's email addy when away from home/WiFi on my O2 networked mobile using its email client.
I found I can't cuz: - Since O2 sold its home BB to Sky and ceased providing mailboxes to all & sundry, it no longer provides an SMTP server to its mobile custs.
- My ISP doesn't allow its SMTP to be used outside its own network and doesn't provide a non-port 25 authenticated SMTP.
I found I could send using Hotmail/Live or GMail SMTPs but my email ends up as coming From: my corresponding email a/c that I have with them. They replaced my own ISP email addy with the ones I have with them in the process of sending.
Is there any way to do this? Or am I forced to use webmail or sending SMSs?

Two choices:
a) Buy your own domain name and find a provider to host your own email that provides authenticated POP/IMAP/SMTP services over SSL.
b) Use a service such as http://www.authsmtp.com/
The problem of B is that you can't set up an SPF record, so your emails may be more likely tagged as spam than other peoples.

Thanks. I was aware of them but have no wish to pay for the privilege. I would only send a few emails while away from home; would mostly wait till I got home.
Any free services?

Are you sure Orange doesn't offer authenticated SMTP on port 587?

In Gmail you can set the "from" address for emails. It is a while since I set mine but generally you setup the from address, google sends an email to that address to make sure you own it and then it adds it as a from in the gmail interface - and you can set it to the default.

+1
gmail can be a bit clunky to find things like the settings but once found there is a lot you can do with it

Kicked Gmail out as they were targeting my email box relative to content received.
Unless this can be removed in settings.

In Gmail you can set the "from" address for emails. In their Webmail you mean?

Yes. Because if we aren't talking webmail then it is down to what the local email programme supports and most also allow you to set a from address.

Are you sure Orange doesn't offer authenticated SMTP on port 587? I'm not sure. The mobile email client seems to set itself up in a peculiar way.
When I first set up my O2 mobile for my ISP mailbox it seemed, as far as I remember, to accept its normal port 25 SMTP settings w/out question. However now when I try to change them it says it is going to check with the outgoing server. Never seen that before with a PC client checking during setup. Many times it fails the check in some way and refuses to do the change. Also seems to behave differently whether connected by WiFi or 3G.
Anyway, now have the Outgoing setup as my ISP's SMTP on port 587 (doesn't recognise port 465) authenticated but not SSL, altho' all of EE Help says 'Don't use authenticated' and never mentions 587. Could only successfully set this up when connected WiFi, i.e. to my ISP's network, and it will now send emails when connected to mobile network.
So, thanks for the hint about port 587 .

No, I wasn't talking Webmail, in the OP.
However, the mobile's email client does allow me to set my ISP email addy as the From: addy, but it is the GMail SMTP (not Webmail), when used, that transposes it into my GMail addy in the received msgs.
But nevermind, I have found a solution that doesn't involve any SMTP other than my ISP's.

Fair enough although not sure why that is happening with googles servers. I use gmail servers and the "send as" is generally fine (it works great from proper PC mail clients but does seem to have a problem when sending from iPhone).
Glad you've got it sorted.

I'll take that back. I sent using the wrong From: addy for this test.

No, I don't find that. Sending from PC on same GMail SMTP as phone DOES also change non-GMail From: addy to my GMail addy, just as phone did.
Have you not registered your non-GMail addy in the GMail Webmail settings, as you suggested earlier in this thread, just so you can do this? I haven't cuz I was looking for a method that didn't involve GMail.
