I can believe that. Most consumer routers are useless if you need more advanced features, even those that cost £300. I'd look at enterprise equipment that's more likely to work or find a router that's easy to re-flash with third-party firmware.
Or buy a brand that is not Netgear or D-Link (and Linksys as was), those brands are selling in large quantities so want to keep support costs down, so don't have all the features you might want. Running an L2TP client is a fairly niche usage, when you think globally.
