Mast upgrade

[link to this post]

I was having a peak through the local planning applications the other day primarily for something unrelated and noticed an application for our local mast to be replaced.

The existing 15m mast is apparently unable to take the additional equipment they (EE & 3) would like to install and so they are proposing a new 15m mast.

The existing mast currently has three CVV65BSX-3x2 antenna installed which according to Cellmapper is exclusively EE 4G Band 3. The proposal is replace the mast with a new one (also 15m) and add an additional three antenna which have been listed as RRZZHHTTS4-65B-R7.

Interestingly these new antenna have support for 3300-3800MHz so are presumably 5G capable.

Is this likely just future-proofing the network to improve existing 4G services for now or does it indicate plans to bring 5G to the area in the near future? We live in a fairly rural part of Northumberland so I would be surprised to see a 5G rollout out here so soon, the only thing I can think is that it's very close to a major trunk road but that doesn't typically fit into 5G's typical use case I wouldn't have thought.

Check the EE coverage map. I have partial 5g coverage in my area according to that map which was a surprise to me.
