3com vs Talktalk

[link to this post]

Since talktalk upgraded my exchange last month to an 8mbps service, my 3com router have failed to connect with a flashing sync light. My first call to TT support got me directly through to a very helpfull 2nd line support who found the problem and said it woul dtake 24hrs to resolve, if it was not fixed by then call them back directly. It didnt solve my problem and over the next 4 days i spent approx 5 hours of arguing with an Indian call centre that although my moden is not supported by TT, i had been advised to contact 2nd line directly. they refused and eventuall denied the fact that i could ever have spoekn to 2nd line "as there were no notes on my file" and they eventually hung up the phone. in desperation i reverted back to my wired speedtouch modem as supplied by TT and this works fine but the point is that its not wireless. I contacted 3com who advised that i needed to upgrade the firmware, which i have done and still doesnt work. As my modem is over a year old, 3com wont give me any further telephone support.

HELP!

Thanks for that. Have done as you suggest, downloaded programme using my TalkTalk connection and my Speedtouch modem. Programme works fine except it keeps finding a problem when testing the "internet" part, keeps returning the following:

Dr SpeedTouch was unable to reach a Website via HTTP.

This is typically due to an incorrect Proxy Server configuration. Using a Proxy Server is currently disabled.

Please make sure no Firewall or local proxy software is preventing Dr SpeedTouch from connecting to the Internet.

Verify your service provider installation instructions for Proxy Server configuration and press the link below to verify or reconfigure your computer's Internet Settings.

I've followed the trouble shhoter it provides (3 attempts) and it keeps giving me the same error. This seems strange as i can access the web with no problems.

Is a software firewall blocking access to the program?

am still working on it, see my conv with deadbeat. seems to be a firewall/proxy server issue that i can't resolve.

OK, you and deadbeat are handling it, but I thought the problem was that the 3com router ahs a flashing synch light and you are back on a modem???

the 3com router has a flashing sync light. my wired modem works fine but when i run the diagnostics to getthe line stats it tell me that it cant connect to the internet, possibly because of a firewall or proxy server. i've disabled the only firewall that i have etc etc and still can't get the diagnostics to run.

Then, probably, methinks, you have 2 separate issues. 1] you might have a broken router 2] you have a some kind of a pc setup problem with your modem. Don't forget, when you cahnge from ethernet to modem, you are using a different network interface, for which any firewall amy be differently setup.

Depends now what you want to do. Do you want to change to using the modem? Or do you want to fix or replace the router - ie the modem is just for diagnostics while you fix the router? If it is the latter, it might not be worth the fight with the modem.

And how are you accessing the internet now? Are you on dialup on the same pc?

My question about the firewall was in regard to DrSpeedtouch seemingly being unable to access the internet
Try resetting the router, usually by depressing a recessed push switch for a few seconds and upon reboot, enter your logon etc information and tell us if it will sync now.

I see this is a few months old, but I try a reply anyway as I have exactly the same issue even down to dr.speedtouch not getting through. My routers (I have a netgear in addition to the 3Com) worked fine for about a week (so the settings should be ok) and after that the only way I can get stable contact with the net is with the Speedtouch modem (I have had a few minutes now and then through the router). I have also disabled firewalls when trying dr.speedtouch but it still doesn't work.

Have you found out more after this thread ended?
