modem/router with 1 USB 1 ethernet

Hi
2 questions:-
I have 1 newish PC with an ethernet port and 1 older without - would the modem/router offered free by my ISP that has 1 ethernet port and 1 USB port be ideal for me?
2ndly, can I unplug the USB cable when not in use as I don't want the cable trailing downstairs all the time? Will it work ok if I just plug it back in when I want?
