WPA2 capable wireless PCI cards

[link to this post]

Hi peeps, I'm wondering if you lot would be so good as to post here if your wireless PCI (or PCMCIA) card is currently running WPA2.

I'm looking to beef up the security of mine and my current cards simply won't do it.

isn't it partly down to the operating system / driver as well ?

As long as you use a decent password WPA is as good as WPA2 for all but the most paranoid (i.e. military security).

Well, the reason I ask is I've now bought two cards and neither seems willing to even do WPA. WEP is as far as I can get.

I have a Netgear card here doing WPA. Bear in mind it may be an "interoperability" problem ie it takes two to tango.

Look on DABS or your favourite retailer. I found several cards which supported WPA. I suspect most new models do, the on-line descriptions tend to be out of date.

Are the cards WPA compatible? If not, would a driver or firmware update make them so?
Does the OS fully support WPA?

Post some details here and I'll investigate further.

As far as I know, at least one of them should be able to do at least WPA.

The cards are:

1. Netgear WG511v2 (the made in China one) PCMCIA.
2. Linksys Dual-Band WMP55AG PCI.

The Linksys' drivers were last updated in 2004, so that I suspect rules out WPA or WPA2. I checked a few places for firmware, however each time I downloaded the 'firmware' it turned out to be the 'drivers' again.

The Netgear isn't any different, drivers stopped coming a long time ago, which is a shame.

Pity me and my poor buying decisions

But what's the OS here? With Windows, nothing before XP does WPA out of the box; AFAIK, you need to find a supplicant.

largely down to the wireless chipset too. any atheros chipset wireless card will do WPA and WPA2 with no bother. search ebay for 'atheros'

*WARNING* some networking vendors (specifically linksys and netgear) use different types of wireless chips in different hardware revisions - so you may buy an atheros linksys/netgear card only to find its broadcom or something similar. avoid both companies (and d-link for that matter) like the plague.

i believe orinoco do some half-decent WPA/WPA2 compatible (atheros) cards.

alternitively, if its for a laptop - theres plenty of atheros minipci cards cheap on ebay.
