Vista laptop loses internet connection after sleep

Just got a laptop running vista and connecting wireless to a Speedtouch 585 router. Connection is excellent and when laptop is started I get a local and internet connection every time no problem.Desktop, which has XP home, has wired connection to router and always works ok as does xbox 360 which is wireless and always ok.

However if laptop goes in sleep mode or I close the lid I lose the internet connection, local connection shows as OK. Have tried changing the power save settings so the laptop does not switch off the network card to save power buy it made no difference.

To get the internet connection back up I just go to network and sharing on vista laptop/status/diagnose/select get new IP settings and then OK. Obviously ? the problem is the vista laptop is not picking up IP settings on restart but any boxes I have seen on router page and laptop I have selected assign IP automatically. Missing something I know .

are you using the latest wireless drivers for your laptop?

Also in the power settings, although changed to keep power to the card, at what level. If the power level is reduced then maybe the card could lose the settings.

That is just a vague possibility, the nearest I get to that is that my USB wireless connector doesn't get recognised - no power light - after a reboot, or a cold boot when the laptop battery is installed. I know that is a USB port power problem, but low power levels can cause all sorts of glitches when they shouldn't.

Re the drivers posts above, did it take you to the card manufacturer's site? If not, how about trying that. But make sure you don't download one that isn't Vista compatible.

Follow-up - are there any keep-alive settings v connect on demand, like there are on the router for the internet connection itself? Or anything similar? If so, how about trying the other setting? Once the laptop is in sleep there could be no handshaking going on with the router, and no wake-up call when you come out of sleep.

This is a known issue with Vista - you can apply the patch here...

The problem will also go away if you upgrade the firmware on your router to 6.2.H.5

windows driver update does not go to manufacturer's site, will have a look tomorrow

downloaded the MS patch X86 version and run it but made no difference, will look at updating router firmware,

Router firmware upgrade & MS patch made no difference, had a look on dell forums and some people have had problems with driver for network card, got an older version of driver and been ok since, apart from Vista crashing once and the vista report blamed the old driver.
