Netgear DG834G Channel Question

Hey guys,

I was having a bit of noise on my network so i decided to change channels. Whenever I turned my router to channel 9 my computer, Apple iMac, was unable to pick up the network. I had to use my ethernet connection to get access to the router to change the channel back again. However, when I did plug in I noticed that all the settings on my router had been wiped. What do you guys think caused this? Was it because I was messing around with the channels? The firmware was still up to date, just I'd lost all my username and password and firewall settings.

Another question - does it matter what channel you use? I had been using 11 but was getting up to 40% noise, now I've changed to 1 and I only get 18% noise. Is using channel 1 OK?

perhaps you hadn't saved the settings and changing channel made it reboot and you lost them , or maybe its a bug ?

The channels are there to be used, 1,6 and 11 don't overlap. 1,5,9 and 13 overlap a bit.

Channel 1 is the lowest frequency and therefore ought to go further, it also seems less popular as a default and hence less crowded.

Is your wireless connection protected by WPA/WEP?. If not it's possible someone could have logged in and wiped the info.

Wingco - I have a WPA password protecting my network, it was probably just me fiddling with the settings that caused me to lose everything.

Yarwell - I changed to channel 1 as I noticed I was getting more noise on the higher channels. I only get 18% noise now as opposed to 40% noise on channel 11. Hopefully this will put an end to my problems.
