Sky Broadband

[link to this post]

Hi people, I have started to get problems with my broadband connection with Sky. I'm experiencing intermitent connection drop outs i.e. I'm having to re-boot the router several times in order to get connected. Sky have replaced my white Netgear router with a Netgear DG934G (BLACK) and I'm still getting the problem.

Sky have advised me along with line tests that my exchange is fine. What I don't understand is that when I check the activity i.e. sent/received bytes there is a lot.

What could the problem be???????????

We would also need to know which type of Sky BB you have - Connect, Mid, or Max.

Just checking - you have secured your wireless network to ensure the large amounts of traffic are not unauthorised use, also worth changing the key even if secured to ensure someone has not guessed it.

Some routers can be swamped by the likes of BitTorrent connections, which would fit your description of the behaviour.

Andrew do you mean the WEP key that sky provided with the router to connect wirelessly?

Or do I need to configure within the router home page?

Boggle! They do that? If I were you I would change from WEP to WPA and use my own randomly generated encryption key (ie password) instead of what the ISP sent (even assuming it was generated in a secure fashion and sent to you in a securely printed manner a la pay slips).

Also change the router config login password as well but you need to keep the password needed to establish connection with the ISP.

So, three different passwords to consider.

I would change that WEP key to another one, WEP can be hacked given 5 or 10 minutes.

WPA is more secure if your hardware supports it
