UK Online and Billion 7402

[link to this post]

Hi,

Having read around the forums looking for a decent router for my new 16Mb ADSL2+ UKOnline connection, I have decide to go for a Billion 7402GX http://www.pcwb.com/catalogue/item/A0426274

I am currently using an oldish Belkin ADSL G router and it is ok the connection is relatively intermittent ,whereas on my old entanet connection it was quite stable. I tried an old Dlink ADSL2+ router and it was useless.

My line stats are:

downstream - noise 6dB however this fluctuates a lot, never stays consistent, anywhere from 0 to 8dB? attenuation is 44dB downstream.
upstream - noise 7dB attenuation 52dB

The line is really intermittent dropping out regularly from about 11o'clock onwards! This may be because the line is adjusting though as I have had UK Online for about a week. It is really annoying me as well, when gaming online I get a much poorer connection than i did with entanet and slower ping times!

Am I likely to see an improvement with the Billion in relation to the consitency of the connection and speed, seeing as I am currently using an ADSL modem. If not can it be improved other ways?

Thanks for any tips.

With ADSL the quality of your line determines the speeds. Please post your full stats (up/down attenuation, sync speed,SNR margin).

full stats:

downstream: noise margin 2dB (at the moment, this often varies), attenuation 44db, sync 6592kbps

upstream: noise margin 7db, attenuation 52dB, sync 896kbps

there are more stats under 'defect indication' shall i post them as well.

The downstream speed seems to be OK for your attenuation. Does anything here http://www.thinkbroadband.com/faq/sections/radsl.html#235 apply?

thanks for the reply.

i have looked at some speed estimaters and i should be getting nearer 8-10Mbps, I'm putting this down to me still using an ADSL modem and not ADSL2+.

I hope the consistency will improve, I have yet to play around with the phone line. I think it may suffer from electrical interference as the phoneline and router are in a utilities cupboard with lots of electrical wiring which is annoying.

well you posted in the wrong section, either ukonline isp section or hardware section would have been better.

If you on adsl2 or adsl2+ (top package) and buy that billion, your drops should go away as the billion can utilise SRA, which changes the synch speed on the fly to maintain noise margin instead of dropping the synch.

If you on adsl1 again the billion I think will be an improvement over what you have now but the speedtouch 585v6 is probably the best choice for adsl1.

Looking at the stats you posted in 2nd post it does look like you on a adsl2 package so the billion 7402 should work well although I havent heard of anyone using the GX model, check its using the argon 432 chipset.
