Connection: static ip at home+dynamic when out

Hi all

I've just got a netbook and it's great.

Got it set up fine to work wireless at home with my network.

In Network Connections (WinXP home) i click on my wireless connection and change the settings in the TCP/IP tab to enter the static ip address of the netbook and my preferred DNS server addresses. As I said all works fine.

However when I'm out and about and want to use a wireless hotspot, I have to go back in and change the settings to "Obtain an IP address automatically".

Fine, but when I want to go back to my home wireless network I have to go back in and set all the ip and DNS addresses all over again!

Is there a way to have my connection set up so with a simple click I can revert between static and dynamic ip without losing all my home settings each time.

Why not use dynamic addressing at home too?

im guessing he has a device at home he uses it that requires the same IP address each time and therefore requires one assigning that is the same each time he connects.

Have a look at this article and see if it helps you.

Best thing to do is to setup your router to issue you the same IP by DHCP automatically.

That is what I do. By far the simplest solution if your router supports IP address reservation.

This looks like just the ticket. I'll give it a whirl.

Hi, more info on Windows (WZC) Wireless Zero Configuration service.

Create two bat files with uisng these instructions and save them to your desktop. Job done. I have customers who do this with no problems.

Tested out on a few free wi-fi networks and happy to report the Windows automatic config and wireless zero stuff worked exactly as I needed it to. Connects to public networks and then connects happily with a static address back at home.

Whod've thought that something by Microsoft actually works properly
