Please help me find the right router!

[link to this post]

Hi there,

I had Bulldog (now taken over by Pipex) Broadband Internet and my router died on me. I was running a Netgear D something wireless router, it did me fine. Howevere Bulldog had server problems and then my router died.

I got a new Belkin N+ wireless router but it seems to be rubbish! I finally had internet last night after a week or dodgy connection and then I couldn't use my XBox Live. I followed some settings I found online but they didn't work so I reset the router and again it wouldn't go back online!

Shall I change it? What should I go for - a new Netgear? We run 2 laptops, a PC and Xbox.

Thanks

Belkin routers on Bulldog (C&W) are not great.

Stick to Speedtouch on that line and you'll have much better stability.

Personally I have found belkin networking kit disappointing.

Linksys (Cisco's consumer brand) has been very hit and miss for me, some kit is good, some bad.

I've never had serious issue with netgear, and tend to find their consumer kit works well.

I have used one Trust router, which worked well, but was under powered once I tried to use any advanced features (which it claimed to support) but it was cheap, so no great shakes.

I currently use a Draytek, which is great, if a little advanced if you don't need all it's features.

It depends what you want. I would tend to go for Netgear in your position.

But uno has suggested Speedtouch, and I have no personal experience of their equipment, and so cannot offer a decent comparison.

May I suggest you buy a computer magazine from your local shop. They all have a best buys section covering all sorts or kit, not just PCs but printers etc and Routers!

See what they say, check the second and third choices. What suits you.
