Broadband issues yet again!

[link to this post]

Hi all,

I've had this problem in the past, and the issue has risen its ugly head again.

Since having the line connected in my new home back in January 10, i had to get an engineer out early doors due to the downstream rate constantly dropping, it went from 8096kbps down to 3500kbps. After a lot of arguing and having the engineer to my home, it sorted itself. Fast forward to now, and here we go again.

3 days ago i started having problems having a decent experience on Xbox Live. I check to see what wireless channel others are using in my street to prevent interference (i use inSSIDer). Whilst changing the channel i noticed that the downstream had dropped to 7332kbps. At this point i got on the phone and had the 'beautiful' experience of speaking to BT technical support. When they said 'you have problem with slow speed' i said No, as it wasn't a problem with the speed, but the downstream.

The advisor said i should change the wireless channel to improve the 'speed' however i know that this isn't the case. Its not the speed i'm bothered about, it was the fact that my line wasn't being stable anymore at the 8096kbps as it had been in the past 8 months. I ended up ending the call when she said there was no fault on the line and that i was receiving a good speed; well for my £24.99 a month i was paying certainly wasn't happy.

I contacted the cancellation department and after pulling the plug on the Hub it returned to the 8096kbps. I've gone out shopping tonight turning the laptop off, and on returning its dropped yet again to 7332kbps.

I have to wait until January before i can cancel to change ISP as i'm not happy anymore.

I think it has something to do with my IP profile and have asked them to get the engineer to reset it at the exchange or to sort it from their end, but i'm not an expert. Could anyone help me with preparing 'bullets' to fire at them, before i head over to make a complaint to Ofcom.

Here are my stats, it hasn't been on long, as i rebooted it, however will post again in a few hours should it change:

Uptime: 0 days, 0:23:22
Modulation: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 8,096
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [KB/MB]: 547.00 / 2.22
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 19.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 18.0 / 35.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 22.0 / 6.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / TSTC
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 10,223
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 4

Line Profile: Interleaved

Cheers

Paul

Sorry to disappoint you, but I can't see any reason to complain.

ADSL by its nature is subject to interference, if you're lucky the interference is from a device under your control. Any new electrical devices in your house? If not it may simply be added MW radio interference which happens as the nights get longer.

...and changing ISP will make no difference to your modem sync rates (unless you move to LLU).

You thought about cancelling due to a drop of 700kbps !
I'm with BT and my sync rate fluctuates from as low as 2,500kbps to as high as 7,300kbps on an up to 8 meg line. Luckily it usually hovers around 6,000kbps and I'm over the moon with that. I think you may have set your expectations a little high.

Yeah i agree there's no reason to complain with regards to the stats i've posted as these are what they should and have been at for the last 8 months, however its when they change and as a result the line downstream drops.

Like i say i'm no expert, just wanting what i've had and in my eyes i suppose what i pay for....there's nothing new in my home including no new devices...other than a issue somewhere, then i can't understand why the downstream would change - i know i probably have got my expectations high, but when i've got a speed from the downstream and a stable connection what has been established for 8 months then why should i have anything less when i'm paying for it?

Cheers for the posts though, its appreciated.

I thought the whole idea of the 10 day optimisation period you have at the beginning is to set the 'optimal' downstream rate?

Are you having problems with wireless or the router sync rate?
The snyc rate looks fine, so it's probably noise interference as another poster suggested.

BatBoy,

Its not the wireless i have issues with, its the downstream rate. The stats i have posted are the stats i have had or similar to have had for the last 8 months.

The downstream rate seems to drop which is inconsistent with the last 8 months, and drops to 7332kbps.

I'm wanting to know why - i'm guessing until i post the results when it happens then no can tell me why..

Thanks again

The 10 day period doesn't really do anything apart from give a feel for how your line performs. The best thing you can do is monitor your sync rates and try to see if any pattern emerges, e.g. train passes, central heating switches on, microwave in use.

If you tend to leave a computer switched on have a look at RouterStats, see http://www.vwlowen.co.uk/internet/files.htm
