Anyone else with Gandi?

[link to this post]

Anyone else got an email from Gandi yesterday saying they are going to charge £2.99 per month for email. I notice that it still says on their website today that you get 2 free inboxes with every domain.

Seems very sly of them to try and take away a service they advertised (and still do) as free with their domains. Surely if you purchased a domain for x number of years with that as an advertised feature they shouldn’t be able to change the rules and charge as you’ve already paid in advance?

Why not use Google mail (gmail) or Hotmail or maybe you have an email system linked to a broadband connection such as Plus.net have.

That defeats the point of purchasing your own domain.

I use Gandi, and I got this notification too. It was missing details about what date the cutover occurs, or what the enhanced features of the pay-for service are, so I queried this with support.

Here's the reply I got:

Thanks for reaching out.

As per our mail, our current mail offer will end and will be replaced by our
new offer:
- More storage space for your mailbox going from 3GB to 10GB.
- Backups and datacenter redundancy for disaster recovery
- Better anti-spam and anti-virus protection
- Mailbox search
- Strong mail server security

What’s going to happen going forward ?

Starting from April 6th, you will have the choice to either :
- Keep your mailbox and pay accordingly on a monthly basis.
- Refuse the offer and you can have the choice to delete the mailbox or migrate
your mailbox to another provider. In that case you will have a two months
window to migrate before the deletion of your mailbox
- Forwarding address remains free

How ?
- You will receive ln the 6th of April a mail with a link to make your choice.

How much it will cost for me ?
- It will depend on how many active mailboxes you own. A mailbox costs 2,99£ so
if you have 2 mailboxes, you will be billed 5,98£ monthly.

I am mulling over my choices where to go. pobox.com's Mailstore service is similarly priced (US$50 per year) but offers 50GB of storage, and separate routing for up to 100 addresses on your own domain (forwarding and/or folders) or 6 addresses at one of pobox.com's domains.

I'd recommend Microsoft.
Accounts start at £3+VAT per month and include 50GB Storage, Contacts, Calendars, unlimited rules and unlimited shared mailboxes.
It also includes Spam and Malware filtering at no extra cost.

Thanks

I'm thinking I might just use iCloud+ as that's only £0.79 per month and gives 50GB shared with iCloud. I do have the Microsot/Office 365 1TB too though. Just on with Gandi support to give them a piece of my mind, as this is a feature of the domain not a promotion so they shouldn't be able to withdraw a service in this way (and at such short notice).

Although you won't be able to use your domain on either of those as far as I'm aware.

Thanks

Apple do now offer using your own domain.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212514

"When you subscribe to iCloud+, you can use a custom domain name that you already own to personalize your iCloud email address, or you can purchase a new domain."

I have been told their chat cannot deal with my question and I must email in. After looking at their T&C's I see the below. This contradicts their own rules, you mind the sales of good act.

Article 11 Gandi’s right to end a Service
Gandi reserves the right to withdraw or cease providing a Service at any time for any reason whatsoever. Gandi makes every effort to ensure that its Services
are offered as long as possible. However, a Service may no longer be offered for sale or abandoned. In that case, the proper functioning of the Service is no
longer guaranteed by Gandi, in any way, from the Service withdrawal date.

In the event a Service is withdrawn from the sale, We shall make Our best effort to notify You six (6) months before the withdrawal date according to the
modalities described in the article 21 hereof. It is Your responsibility to take the necessary measures to replace the Service by another, or to no longer use the
Service before the withdrawal date. In either case, Gandi shall either (i) offer a comparable service that You can use until the term of the subscribed Service,
(ii) offer a prorated credit, or (iii) refund You on a pro rata basis, the option being determined at Gandi’s sole and absolute discretion.
