NO internet at WAP

[link to this post]

No internet at WAP.

I have a Virgin HUB 3 router. This supplies internet to a Netgear ProSafe GS108. From the GS108 I distribute internet to the house, via CAT 5 cables.

One cable feeds my garage in which I have a TP AC1200 WAP

Two days ago the WAP lost internet. Several weeks ago I changed the RJ45 connector, at the Netgear end, because the little tag had broken off. I checked all was OK before reconnecting by using my VCELINK network cable tester. The WAP worked on powering up, as it has for the last three years.

However two days ago the WAP lost interent. I have rechecked the long wire, a single 50 foot run from the Netgear to the WAP.

I rechecked the wiring using the VCELINK; all 8 LEDs illuminate. I connected the RJ45 connector to another output on the Netgear; to a port that is known to work i.e. the desktop I am using to sent this.

I disconnected another TP WAP, used to run my wifi printers i.e. it is working, and connected it to the RJ45 plug in my garage. NO internet on that either.

So on two working outputs from the Netgear, all other connected devices are working, wiring checked again by the VCELINK, replaced original WAP with another know to be working WAP i.e. running my printers.

What could be wrong. NOTE about the time the internet died, to the WAP, there was a thunderstorm in the area. But if it caused an equipment failure I think my checking would have found that?

Any advice welcomed

Lift and shift the TP AC1200 WAP and connect it directly into the Virgin HUB 3 router via a known good patch lead and tell us if it works.

2nd law of comms - it's always the cable.

Even if it's testing ok for continuity there could be an issue...you'd need a proper tester to find it.

Replace the ends (start with the one you replaced a while ago). 99% that if you get that right it will fix it.

wink Comms is hard wink

I second this.

Just because theres continuity, doesn't mean that the line is clean enough for data to pass.

Only way you could test that is with an expensive FLUKE style tester i would think.

As has previously been posted, Take the TPLink WAP and use a short cable to check if its OK or not.

If you took a known good WAP to the garage but it still used the potentially faulty spine cable run, then its gotta be the cable run smile

Thank you for your replies and help. Now working again.

Tried garage WAP directly off HUB3 then Netgear switch; both gave me internet showing WAP working. Note the replacement WAP I tried, runs my printers, is connected by a CAT5 cable which only has pins 1,2,3 & 6 present; not sure how I aquired this cable. I note that, unlike other devices, both WAPs only illuminate the left hand LEDs on the Netgear; I assume that's why the 4 pin cable works as the WAP does not need the other signal cables.

FLUKE type would be too expensive.

I use T568B config for CAT5 cables. I used a pass through connector so I could see the order they were in the connector before I crimped. Looked at the connector fitted a few weeks ago, not a pass through connector, and have now cut off but it looked to me like it was fitted correctly although the VCELINK did show some missing LEDs before I replaced the connector; why did it not when I tried it several weeks ago and earlier today?

Once again thank you for your help.

Please do yourself (and us 🙈) a huge favour and bin it.😅

In this day and age only ever full. straight through 8-wire, 8 connector patch leads of a Cat5e or higher persuasion. The el-cheapo pair 2 & 3 budget ethernet cables that came packed with something that only ever at best ran at 10BaseT or 100BaseT are loooong gone.

@athegn,

Congrats on getting it working. I thought I would post my 2 cents worth (being half-American). It might be worth your while upgrading your Hub to the Hub 5 so that you have the most up-to-date security settings. I don't think Virgin really support the Hub 3 anymore as it is SO old now.

They don't do this for free. I have a Hub 3 and to get a Hub 5 I would have to upgrade my service level (speeds) and I have zero interest in paying Virgin Media any more money.

Why do you think the Hub 3 is out of support?

VM until recently didn't require the return of the older Hub 3's and just asked users to recycle them. However, they have done an about turn and now look for them to be sent back. They are still being used for VM accounts at the moment.
