.<Snip> The el-cheapo pair 2 & 3 budget ethernet cables that came packed with something that only ever at best ran at 10BaseT or 100BaseT are loooong gone.

One of the older XBox consoles was shipped with a 100Mb 4 cable ethernet lead. I guess money must have been tight at M$ towers at the time wink

'I have a Virgin HUB 3 router.' Using the royal I, British joke.

The Virginia account is paid for by my wife; she wants the content they publish. I only want the broadband, which I get for free. My wife did consider a HUB 3 upgrade but decided she did feel it would be value for money. The broadband speed is adequate for our use, at present.

Hi,

If it's not then, IMHO, I think it should be. It's a fairly ancient bit of kit. Maybe MS should still support XP. Both are about the same age.

XP is Windows 2002 and has probably 500 million lines of code. Back then DOCSIS 2.0 was common.

The "Hub3" is made by Arris and supports DOCSIS 3.0 so must be since 2008 in the UK, and I believe still provided to those whom take speeds upto 500 Mbps. I would suspect as a dedicated networking device it has at worst 1 milliion lines of code to maintain.

Not remotely comparable.

Hi,

I was trying to think of something old that could be supported but isn't anymore (for obvious reasons). I obviously chose badly there but I think the meaning was clear. Hub 3 doesn't really have the improved security measures that are on the Hub 5. Personally, if I was in charge of VM, I would have stopped supplying the Hub 3 in favour of the Hub 5, but I am not in charge so this is just my personal opinion.

Good reason to use in modem mode.

If the console can only go to 100mbit e.g. xbox and xbox 360 then why not. Not many households would have had gbit at the time anyway.
