Experience with FTTP over point to point radio

[link to this post]

Hi,

Does anyone have experience using P2P radio to relay a business connection?
I've seen quite a lot of places nearby doing it using Ubiquiti, either to a house or some business park.

We currently don't have access to reliable internet, unable to get 4G signal as we are surrounded by a forest. They were going to build a 5G tower here but most people protested.

Unfortunately unable to claim vouchers for fibre nor any plans to put fibre here.

But I found a few places that have native FTTP and LOS back to the house.
I've also found an ISP that can do address splitting.

Q1:
So the property currently has a connected service but no spare ports, would they upgrade the ONT to have more ports or install another drop with a separate ONT?

Q2:
Could sharing an ONT cause performance problems? I saw somewhere that some ONT's have a 1Gb backplane shared with all the ports and optics?

Q3:
How do I explain it or sell the idea to someone that may have no knowledge of technology or any interest, I'm aiming for businesses hoping they might be a bit more open to having a mini sky dish on their building.

And then I would pay units+ont max wattage + any roof space rent.

By default it's a separate drop cable and new ONT.
This is changing to a process where a subsequent provide (a 2nd FTTP order) automatically triggers a 4 port ONT order.

I'm yet to see a 4 port Nokia in the field and the Huawei ONT's are being withdrawn from new supply so you may or may not get a 4 port ONT.
It probably depends when you order.

The OpenReach 4 port ONT's do indeed have a 1Gb backplane shared with all 4 ports.
The ONT's are surprisingly easily swapped to a non OpenReach ONT wink Although it technically isn't meant to be done, I know someone who does it everyday. I wouldn't dream of changing mine smile

Can't help with that unfortunately.

Mikrotik and Ubiquiti (amongst others) provide pre-paired 60 GHz dish kits that will support a 1 Gbps bidirectional link for reasonable outlay.

What sort of distance do you have between points?

I guess the question is "what's in it for them?"

They will have an additional fibre line coming in that they will need to allow to be installed and allow people in if there are problems to fix it. How would the billing work - would they get the bill and then you pay it or would you have the bill for their address?

In these cases it may well be that money is what convinces them. How much are you willing to pay someone to host your connection?

Thanks for your response.

I've heard about people trying to clone the serial and mac address using programmable GPON on a stick or something, guessing they finally got it to work.

Thanks for your response.

I saw Mikrotik but couldn't really find any videos on them or at least in English, though Ubiquiti seems quite straightforward to use.

The closest one is about 360-400m away.

I can certainly recommend Ubiquiti as I have used the ones below to link sites up to about 1km apart and they get the full 450Mbps

Thanks

Have used the previous iteration of these. Similar distance. No problem.

A few ISPs said they would be able to do address splitting, different payment address than the service address. So would pay directly to the ISP.

Yeah, money is probably the way to go.
