HeyBroadband installation process?

[link to this post]

Any HeyBroadband customers on here? It looks like it'll be available to me soon, and wondering what the installation process is like.

Cheers,
AP

Great! How long after the white box was installed on your pole were you able to order the service?

I have a white box up my pole, but the "cable" is just rolled up at the top, and there's a white X on the ground by the pole with "BT" written next to it!

Also, will they terminate the fibre where you want it?

I'm in Wycombe, and it seems widely available in some areas, but not others (yet).

Cheers,
Andy

I'm in Gerrards Cross. The service was installed on my road in Sept 2020. Went live in March 2021. It was scheduled to go live December 2020 but OpenReach "accidentally" cut their main cable back to their central hub for GX so that had to be repaired delaying their go-live (installation guy spilled the beans). Their CS team have been responsive for me and when I asked them about go-live they gave me indicative dates so you could ask them.

They were accommodating on installation. I explained I was a bit precious about wiring and they took the time to route wires behind guttering and other features to hid the fibre. Same on the inside.

Seems to have gone up in price a bit since I joined. I'm on the symmetrical gigabit package for £40/month.

Looks like I may still have quite a wait then!

I pre-ordered, so should get the £40 deal for the 1Gb package.

I'm surprised you got an indicative date though. Everyone asking on FB is being told "in the next couple of months", including myself. I've asked several times, over several months, and keep getting that canned reponse!

I had a TP-Link Archer GPON Router given to me but that was a year ago now. According to their support page, they use this:

ADTRAN 814-v6 Home Gateway Unit. Wi-Fi 6 GPON HGU

Personally, I asked for their Router to be put in Bridge Mode so I can use my own kit....which is a Draytek 2865.

Really useful, thanks. I'd need bridge mode too. Is that doable by us, or does the engineer have to do it (or, I hope not, head office?)?

With my kit, they had to do it which they did remotely. Took a couple of days.

Yes.. this is the Router (4th one..!) that got installed. Listen to the install team when they try to activate it. I've been told that the firmware was the issue (trying to find out what version) and as some of you know, it has Admin, Support, User accounts.

The GUI is very restricted on the User account, so I have asked for admin rights. Lets see.

But over all - Not bad just for the service. just have to add the "toys" now.

have fun

Installed yesterday. This is the bridge unit from Adtran (adtran sdx611) they gave - tiny. Next to an Amazon Echo for scale

https://i.ibb.co/sjBmmwk/IMG-5317.jpg

Unfortunately no internet yet; it's not getting an IP. Engineers claim it's all set up as it should and getting a signal, so hopefully tech support will be able to turn it on.

Were you given a username and password, or are those not needed with FTTP? I'm still not online. Each time I try, it fails to get an IP - have tried plugging it into my laptop, and the wifi hub, but no joy. I'm hoping it's an easy fix for them to make remotely but so far communication (albeit at the weekend) hasn't been great...

You have check thing network properties are set to get ip/dns automatically for both IPv4 and IPv6?

Also could have firewall software blocking network connections?

Best of luck

Would you mind sharing your settings? PPPoE? Did you have a username/password? Or just dynamic IP?

Hey Mikee,

I sent you a PM, but I don't think you got it.

Did they give you admin rights to the router?

Mine is booked to be installed now for Tuesday. What does the internal termination look like?

How did you get them to give you an ONT instead of their modem/router? Just ask on the day?

Do they just drill a hole in the wall an pass the fibre through it?

My install is tomorrow (hopefully), so want to be prepared.

Email [email protected] and ask them to put a note on the job for the engineer to install a bridge unit.

It may not work instantly as it needs their support/techs to turn on bridge mode remotely. You'll get an email from them once activated with a subject "Bridge Mode Activated" containing your PPPoE user/pass.

Yes, they put a smallish HeyBroadband-branded plate inside your house. The engineers we had were brilliant.

Hi, I’ve just got heybroadband installed but I’m finding their Altran router range is fairly weak. Is that why you’re using your own router?

No, it’s because I self-host….but ISP provided stuff is generally lacking so you may want to look at your own setup to solve WiFi coverage challenges in your home.

Hi, I am sorry to trouble you during the holidays, but I am quite desperate. I got Hey Broadband couple of months ago, but have been having issues all the time. Finally decided to go the own equipment route like yourself. It got installed couple of days ago. The engineer gave me the PPPoE user name and password, but despite trying all options on two routers - no luck at all. And as expected het support is not there when I need them! Could you please help? Are there any other settings for the PPPoE connection and do you know how to log in into the ONT interface as I have a feeling that the issue may be there?

Any guidance will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi, I just put in the username and password and it worked off the bat. That was on my old FritzBox. I upgraded to an Asus AC-86U, and same thing, just put in the username and password.

Assuming they switched your Hey router for an ONT, they may not have commissioned the ONT properly.

Does it have all 3 lights lit up solid green?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I would not be surprised if the ONT is not configured correctly.
Tier 2 were not very helpful to the engineer that came round it was his first time...
I requested all settings, but it is 2 business dates turnaround!
Burning through my backup mobile connection. Tempted to get all unlimited mobile data and use them untill Swish finaly pulled their finger ... and come round. Getting similar speeds any way, but not real IP...
Any idea how to enter the ONT interface?
Well.. no point getting my knickers in further twist - the boss is not impressed when I mentioned that we will need to ration the internet a bit..
Enjoy the holidays!

I think the ONT is locked down, much like the routers are. Probably only configurable remotely by Hey.
