SMPF (Shared Metallic Path Facility) is basically when the line rental company uses Openreach WLR (Wholesale Line Rental) and the broadband is LLU. (Complicated by the fact that as far as Openreach are officially concerned BT Wholesale is LLU just like Sky, TT and C & W).
MPF is when both the line rental and the broadband are LLU.
O2/Be were SMPF even when the phone line rental was through them. Sky LLU used to do SMPF and MPF but new customers now can only be MPF - except for the special arrangement for O2 and Be imports.
TalkTalk is MPF.
On MPF the line is invisible to BT Wholesale, and taking the line back to BT normally means putting it back on Openreach WLR, (thus making it SMPF), whereupon BT Wholesale can see it. It doesn't have to be taken back to BT Retail.
