UNO FTTP question/s

[link to this post]

Hi... been with UNO (ADSL2+) for a decade + now (LLU) and been very happy with their service.

But FTTP looks to now be available to us. Post on our rural property now has a fibre box on it, just needs wiring up to the house (over head). So looking at moving to FTTP with UNO. But have a few queries.

1) Not sure from looking at UNO WEB site whether digital phone connection comes with it? Or is this just standard with FTTP? I am aware that supposedly by Dec 2025 the old analogue connection is going anyway.

2) Could I choose to keep the analogue copper connection for now and just get the FTTP broadband via UNO?

3) If I have to go for a Digital voice connection via FTTP, can I keep my old landline number? After some 46 years at the same property, it would be an absolute nightmare to have a new phone number.
Though with frequent power outages during the winter months (and little to no CELL phone signal) this could be a bit problematical at times.

Thanks in advance.

PS. Never thought Openreach would run the necessary several miles of fibre to reach only a handful of isolated rural properties like ours. But looks like it's here now.

Gave UNO a phone and asked them direct.
Answered the phone on the third ring, impressed I am.

- Broadband only.

- Just tell the Openreach engineers to leave the copper connection alone.

Though not sure what happens when December 2025 comes along. I assume there are third party suppliers for some sort of Digital Voice connection. TBC on this one (no urgency I suppose here).

Happy days.

You may find that the cost of the PSTN line rental may increase after the ADSL is ceased. Otherwise I'm sure you will have no problems with the combination of an uno FTTP broadband and PSTN voice service. Eventually, possibly after advice from uno, you can consider VoIP and porting your current phone number.

Good luck.

No answer from Uno for me. frown

I ported my number to VOIP a few years ago, although I never use it. They disconnected my copper after installing my fibre so I would ensure your number is "safe" before you move BB.

Interestingly, the charge for my PSTN line rental actually appears to be going down.

"As you don't have broadband, we're reducing your monthly line rental by £14.62. "

Not quite sure why. As I've had LLU broadband only with UNO for over a decade now.

All done and dusted now.

OpenReach came the other week and did a decent job installing the CSP/ONT etc.
And all is well. I stuck with UNO for the BB, as their prices seemed reasonable for a 24 month contract (220/30 Mbps) at £31.99
With the reduction in my PSTN line rental. The actual cost for FTTP is pretty much what I was paying for my ADSL connection.

I did speak to the OpenReach engineer when he came, to make sure that he did not cut off the copper etc.

Finally after years of waiting, a decent BB service.
I never thought they would run several miles of fibre for what at best services some 10 rural properties.
Not like it was an easy job, as some underground ducting had collapsed by all accounts.
New 4k TV turned up the same day.
Happy days.

PS. I suppose before Dec 2025, I shall have to look at a separate VOIP supplier for the telephone .
Vonage look decent enough. No rush though I suppose.

I'm just surprised that the changes re telephone/s has not yet been discussed much in the wider press!

That's interesting: uno's SOHO PSTN line rental cost for those who also have SMPF broadband was/is (?) lower than that for non-broadband customers https://www.uno.uk/packages/phone-line-rental/ (prices excluding VAT) I guess that must also include customers who have FTTP broadband since perhaps uno are no longer offering standalone line rental.

Several months ago, whilst I was still with uno, I was contemplating ceasing their SMPF ADSL and going for their FTTP product yet retain their very economical SOHO PSTN line rental service. However at that stage I was lead to believe, perhaps mistakenly, that their line rental price may increase to that which is charged to non-broadband customers.

Forgot to mention that my PSTN phone rental was (and still is) with BT.
BB only with UNO.

Thanks for the clarification, obviously I wrongly assumed that you previously had both broadband and line rental from uno as a partial LLU service (SMPF) e.g. resold WLR/BTw line rental and TalkTalk Business ADSL broadband. That is the form of SMPF service that I once had with uno.

I guess your BT Retail line rental cost may have been reduced mysteriously due to ADSL being ceased on the line...

Vonage are quite expensive for VOIP as they are in the do it all for you market. VOIP suppliers such as Voipfone or A&A would likely be cheaper. You can port your number to them. The Gigaset N300 is a VOIP Dect base station and works well with Gigaset Dect phones. There is a VOIP section of this forum.
