Re MTU: Ithe defaults are mtu=1500 l2mtu=1592, and yes, you're right it works fine with those. I've have just set it back to prove it.
Unfortunately, even after bouncing the pppoe-client interface and the ethernet interface, it didn't re-establish; I needed to reboot. Weird.
