Whyfibre rollout

[link to this post]

Does anyone have any info about WhyFibre? They (or at least their subcontractor, FiberOne) are active installing in North Herts.

There are a couple of articles about them on ISPreview from 2021 and February this year

https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2025/02/signs-...
https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2021/10/new-uk...

As noted by ISPreview, Whyfibre appear to have a holding page and remnants of an old website.

The articles suggest that they are/were planning to cover underserved areas of Southern England but they're running in fibre in my road, already served by Openreach FTTP (since Sep 2022), Netomnia/Youfibre (since Jan 2025) and Nexfibre have just added fibre cabinets to upgrade VM.

Always nice to have choice, but we're hardly 'underserved' smile

Are you sure they're running fibre in your road?

FiberOne has been around Stevenage installing nothing but sub-ducts (hollow plastic tubes) in existing Openreach ducts. They've damaged people's Openreach fibre cables in the process and caused headaches for Openreach. They've pretty much laid the sub-ducts under all the roads where I live now, but there's no sign of them coming to run fibre through them.

There are coils of fibre hanging from some of the local poles, and these appeared at the same time as labels at the base of the pole saying Whyfibre.

I can't really figure out what they're doing. They knocked my Openreach connection out last week with their heavy handed work, and even if they get as far as having a live network they're going to be competing with Openreach, CityFibre and (for half the road at least) VM's fibre overbuild, with a 1Gb product priced at £45 if their very low info web page is accurate.

They’re back with the cobras to install sub-ducts along our street today.
They've applied for roadworks permission for a couple of days. I may head there tomorrow if they're still working to see what they're doing.

They came around with cobras and sub-ducts as can be seen in the picture.

This means they didn't deploy any fibre here, or haven't yet.

FiberOne came today to blow fibre through the sub-ducts.

This explains why they had to deploy the hollow sub-ducts ahead of time. They're using blown fibre.
