Cant connect -Help

[link to this post]

For the last couple of days now, Ive been unable to connect via ADSL, all i get is a message on firefox and iinternet explorer telling me that the page could not be found, my router is fully synched and conected, and everything seems OK, another device reports something about DNS errors.
Ive tried clicking on the network conections, and selecting repair conection, but its not making any difference.
whats happening?

First thing to try and do is to ascertain whether you really have a connection or not or whether it is just a DNS problem.

Assuming you are on Windows, open a command prompt session and issue the command

ping 195.166.128.16

What you want to see is something like the following

D:\Temp>ping 195.166.128.16

Pinging 195.166.128.16 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 195.166.128.16: bytes=32 time=31ms TTL=244
Reply from 195.166.128.16: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=244
Reply from 195.166.128.16: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=244
Reply from 195.166.128.16: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=244

Ping statistics for 195.166.128.16:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 29ms, Maximum = 31ms, Average = 29ms

If you do see this then you know you have a connection at least.

If you do have an internet connection now try again using the slightly different version of the command as follows

ping www.plus.net

If you get the same sort of answer as above then DNS is working and I'm now stumped without further information.

However if you get something like

Ping request could not find host www.plus.net. Please check the name and try again.

then it would point to a DNS problem.

Try this out and let me know what results you get

I bet you tried it but
have you rebooted your router?
Sometimes I have trouble with the same router.

Well the tests certainly seem to prove your router is working and has sync'd with your local exchange. There are two more things you can do now to prove the problem is with PN. Firstly, from the command window run the following command

tracert 195.166.128.16

This will probably show one hop to your router and will then probably just show rows of asterisks.

The one last test to prove it is PN and not BT and that is connect to the BT test system. It's been quite a while since I was last on a BT based ADSL connection so I cannot remember the details. However it is documented here on Kitz's web site.

Whilst looking for the URL I notice Kitz has set up an online forum here where you might be able to get some more specialised help.

What IP address has your PC been given?

Is windows setup to obtian its IP automatically (as well as DNS) or have you set a static IP and set the DNS IPs yourself?

In a dos box type ipconfig /all and post the results.

I've been having the same problem for a few weeks now. Sometimes I get "page cannot be found" and then hitting Refresh in Internet Explorer brings it up. Other times I can't get any sites even though my router reports it's connected. Whereabouts are you based in the UK? Maybe it's a regional problem?
