Am I really out of luck?

[link to this post]

Why is it, when you sign up for a 2Mb connection, during the past few weeks have my connection speeds been so bad, I may as well have been on dial up again?

Downloading a file from the web this evening when a friend came round, 78mb, took well over 20 minutes, probably nearer 30. This averaged something stupid like 40k/sec. Kinda reminded me when I was on dial up and downloading a 4mb file or something and it taking 20 minutes or so and thinking that was slow!! lol...

Before all these bad connections, I was managing 230k/sec minimum from anywhere. I've even had speed test results (from this speed tester site) at about 300kbps...

I really do hope that when my upgrade to 'upto' 8mb finally happens, I do actually get some decent downloading times because otherwise I want to switch ISP's and fast.

Does anyone else get this? I'm on the Premier option 1 service...

If you want some help, I suggest you post some connection data, such as router stats (if you are using one). Without a sync rate etc. there's no way to tell what you should be getting. Likewise do you know how far from the exchange you are? Check http://www.samknows.com/broadband/ for your location details etc.

plusnet 1MB rural connection.

Hi

yeah line stats would help others to help you ...

might easily be a line problem requiring BT to sort out or could be simple contention on your exchange or even the dreaded 'throttle' traffic management your experiencing

more details would help for sure

sorry couldnt give you a simple answer

Its not a problem, its a shame I didnt use my brain a bit more!!

Here's my stats from my router (Netgear DG834 version 2)

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2272 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 31 db 9 db
Noise Margin 27 db 31 db

It tells me "You are approximately 993 metres from the exchange (straight line distance)."

I am also waiting on BT to upgrade my ADSL to a 'upto 8Mb' (I love the up to!! :lol) I'm wondering what I might manage

I dont think I'm near to getting throttled because I've downloaded to much (even tho a 13Gb limit is stupid even on a 2mb connection) so I cant wait to transfer over to the new ISP I've picked out And for

looking at those stats you should be easily maxing out your 2mb .. so at a guess i would say its most likely contention ... though i wouldnt put anything past ISP's nowadays so throtterling is still possible

if you havent already i would suggest make sure your pc is upto fittness with an anti-virus & anti spam/trojan/adware check

on your stats allowing for contention i would guess you should easily hit 5MB .. my old line stats of att 28 SNR 26 got me 6-8mb through summer but dropped heavily to 5.5mb when SNR was falling off overnight

now happy blueyondering with Telewest as ADSL got me flustered with ISP changes .. lol

I'm maxing out the line when I've got a good connection or lack of useage on my line!! I thought it was a bit annoying to be honest...

I use AVG Free which does me fine

I think my figures change a bit, but I'm sure it will sort itself out
