It would seem that @mail have replied to Plusnets comments, by pointing out that plusnet were using an old unpatched version of @mail.

I thought Plusnets mail was insulting, as my home machines are secure, and up to date; but the fact that they were knowingly using an old version of the webmail, makes it particularly insulting, as well as showing them to be hugely incompetent.

Thanks for the link.

The post to El Reg may not be from the people behind @mail but I believe from what has been discussed here, on the offical forums and on the usergroup forums that some of it is based in truth. PlusNet have used the fact that they are using a custom modified install of the software and the development time necessary as an excuse to not implement all sorts of requested and much needed features. I'm very much looking forward to reading the report about their investigation, but I can't help feeling it's not going to be as honest open and clear as is needed after such a spectacular gaffe.

At the time @Mail was implemented, there were a lot of reservations about the extent of the modifications Plusnet were making and the difficulty that would present if trying to keep up to date with new versions.

Now that has been pulled and PN are pointing people to https://www.mail2web.com/cgi-bin/login.asp?lid=0&il=0 until something new emerges. This of course has NO Plusnet customisations.

Go figure!

Indeed. I remember the ongoing discussions over the platform, it's implementation and why it wasn't being updated.

And throwing all it's customers in need of a webmail solution to a third party solution which costs them absolutely nothing while indeed helpful is an interesting move. Perhaps the next e-mai will advise people on an alternative e-mail provider, or ISP

Isn't the email component itself a value added service so they don't even have to provide any email if they really wanted to?

I'm sure if they wanted they could spin it that way, it isn't the first time after all But I don't think they will nor do they need to remove all email. Webmail on the other hand has gone for now and I can't see it making a return for some time. The last thing customers need is a rushed out solution.

One problem with the suggestion to use third party web-based tools is that PlusNet's core e-mail servers still do not seem to fully support end to end SSL connections, something repeatedly requested. So customers details could be spread even further and potential open to abuse.

Thought of your post when I read

"Overnight we built new Webmail servers which will be used to host a temporary Webmail solution. We hope to make this available tomorrow."

Yeah I just saw that too.
It wouldn't surprise me if it is more stable and secure than the old webmail platform. But dear god, when PlusNet do something they don't have go for it. No changes to the platform for years due to it being too much work, then an entirely new implementation in what... less than 48 hours. I wonder which version they're using and if they've had adequate time to evaluate and test it. Oh who am I kidding
