Migration Mystery

[link to this post]

Hi,

I've just requested a MAC to transfer to Demon. I've got the code and have been told that there will be an extra 8 days in the 30 day cancellation notice that will need to be paid.

I want to register with Demon, but I don't want them charging me monthly until (ideally) 30 days from now.

So my question is, do PlusNet continue to provide me broadband (as they are charging me for it) until the last day, then Demon automatically take over and start billing? In which case, is there any advantage to me registering for Demon now, or should I purposely wait until the last day before the MAC expires?

On the PlusNet front, when would be a wise time to cancel the Direct Debit?

Any advice would be most appreciated!

Thanks,

Alex

The question I'd ask is where are the extra 8 days coming from?

If this is just a case of the monthly payment date for your PlusNet account being after your migration date then there's no problem. Raise a ticket once the payment is made and PlusNet will refund the difference (the 8 days).

You'll want to register with Demon and tell them of the date you wish your line to be activated, i.e. tell them the day you are leaving PlusNet etc. This should enable a smooth transfer.

Don't cancel the direct debit now, wait until the last payment's gone in and you've got your refund. Once that and your transfer are successful then yes, cancel it to be on the safe side.

PN will continue to provide a BB connection until they are told the migration is successful. For this reason if you get a MAC and don't use it, you will still have internet access with PN.

In terms of when to tell Demon, you could do it now explaining that you want the migration to take place on the last day of your 30 days notice period.

You should cancel the DD when the migration has taken place.

I believe it is the 'wrong time of the month' (so-to-speak!) and hence 8 days in to the new billing period.

So PlusNet will in fact take another 21.99 from me next month, I then have to claim back the 22 days that I'm no longer a customer.

Is this the standard way of doing things? Is there no mechanism for taking the 8 day cost instead of the full thing and then refunding?

Thanks for the prompt response!

Aha. I'm not sure if they've changed things and there's some way of paying the 8 days, probably not unfortunately. It's the standard way PlusNet do things, and actually pretty trouble free from my experience. PlusNet are generally good about refunding promptly.. once the ticket is in and dealt with.

They will normally take the full payment (unless something has changed and I have forgotten). The reason for this is because until the migration takes place you could still be staying with PN and letting the MAC expire.

I see, fingers crossed it all works out! Half the battle of migrating is co-ordinating the two companies to pass the parcel.

From looking at other users' experiences. With PlusNet, the 30 days notice to cancel runs in tandem with the MAC expiration. So effectively, if you want to avoid paying for broadband twice from two companies, the new ISP needs to kick in as the MAC expires - timing is everything!

Thanks for the help!

It's done this way because there's no guarantee that you'll migrate on that specific date. If you change your mind about the migration at the last minute or the new ISP cancels the order for some reason or there's a delay then you'd still be our customer and we'd still be providing service.

Makes sense. as I said from personal and third-hand experience, dealing with refunds for product changes has always been an area PlusNet have been good at.
