IMO there are two sides to the referals.
One is adverts on someones website etc and can understand getting paid for that.

But what about friends & family who someone has said "join PN they are great",
but then leaves as they have found a better/cheaper service.
I wouldn't want to profit from friends & family for a service I don't use.

I wouldn't want my friends or family using plusnet even if I hadn't referred them.

Got to agree with that, I wouldn't feel good about getting referrals from an ISP that I not longer use.

....They were even offering holidays and other prizes for referrals last year.

Which reminds me, has anybody seen any announcements anywhere regarding who won the VW Golf which was the top prize in a recent referrals promotion?

Indeed there are. But I was just saying the way in which things have moved within PlusNet.

Originally referrals were a way for people who used and supported an small and forward thinking ISP, to recommend the ISP to others and get a little something back. Effective cheap advertising and a thank-you to those who supported the company.

More recently it has become more a clear marketing tool with prizes competitions and the scheme being opened up to everyone. Sure, people do still refer friends/family/etc, but the focus from PlusNet's side moved on (but didn't forget) it's previous focus.

There has without a doubt been a shift in the way in which PlusNet approach referrals, although obviously they want the same benefits, new customers for little advertising or marketing outlay.
