This weekend my connection has been...

Mostly up.

After all the problems I had last week, the connection dropped very few times over the weekend... We had a couple of friends over on Saturday and one of them said that BT had been doing some line work and this could be the cause of our disconnections. They noticed that there was a hole across the street with wires coming out of it. Is there anyway of working out if there is work being done in my area?

Yes and no.

Broadband providers can perform line testing and look for recent activities in relation to your broadband service. These do however apply, only were the work was on broadband only.

Repair of generic lines faults, or ones rectified as part of a more serious issue - such as that described here - will not generally show on these reports.

I don't know if you will get any milage out of your PSTN provider either, however, there is a chance of greater sucess.

As part of the faults process on our Home Phone product, the system used to log faults with BT will report if there is a lead case in regard to a fault. The fault we log, duly gets filled as a sub-case of that fault.

We cannot however look at past faults, or test for lead cases. The majority will only be informed after a fault is logged - ie, after the point were charges can apply - though some will show a lead case is open during the logging process.

So in generic terms, its a general no, we can't. However, there are some smaller cases when we can.

Just been checking my connection today and it hasn't disconnected once since 10.30 last night. I rebooted at lunch time to get a faster speed which worked.

Is it reasonable to think the issue has been resolved or should I wait a few days and see how it goes?

As with any problem that seems to have gone away, there is nothing you can do but to see how to goes.

To be perfectly frank, your asking the same thing but different ways.

If there is something to suggest a physical problem may have been resolved (ie, information by word of mouth), there is a strong chance there has been.

Line maintenance happens all the time, only 99% of the time you don't notice it. There has been an increase in the number of people seeing it though since ADSL, as a digital service, it is a little more suseptable to variations that may not be audiable to the human ear.
