Leaving; charge for domain name?

[link to this post]

I am in the process of leaving PlusNet and I have just had my MAC code from PN along with a message that includes "...if you have a domain name registered with us, you may be charged a cancellation fee if you decide to join a different supplier."

Now I did take advantage of their .co.uk domain for

If you've already moved it to a different supplier (actually changed it's IPS tag rather than just moving hosting) then I can't see why you would incur any more charges.

Needs addressing from a customers point of view. I would want to be told if I am or are not being charged. Being told I MAY be charged is too vague.

Also to refer to a possible charge as a cancellation charge, without stipulating a figure, is also non customer friendly. Be open and honest and the customer may return

Being vague is the way that many companies like to cover themselves though A sortof generic disclaimer. And in this case I can see where they are a bit stuck between a rock and a hard place.

On the one hand, to check if a customer will be charged and if so how much may delay the sending of the MAC (the original purpose of the e-mail).

On the other, if they do not advise customers, some will well get upset if they later find out if they have a charge.

That was the old Plusnet.

PlusNet's domain name charges have always been excessive. Some like the idea of PLusNet managing everything, having it all billed together, etc. But as you say, when it's trivial to regsiter a domain for a few quid a year, PlusNet's charges seem excessive.

That said I think they're just passing on their costs, they can't do the bulk registrations that lower the costs for dedicated providers. And they do allow you to import and host a domain for free, which is great. But I wouldn't recommend anyone use PlusNet for domain registration.

Indeed - 12 pounds (1 pound a month) is less than some firms charge for hosting, and many of the legacy accounts had one or more domains allowed free (for non-customers, the 1 pound a month option was for extra domains, I think), though personally I avoid .uk anyway, so never bothered... (with free or paid-for domains).

1 pound a month is hardly too costly, just a little more than bargain basement "domains only" automated firms will charge (and they make up for the low .uk charges if you ever decide to get a .com domain... typically 3 times what a US firm charges)
